Last week during the weekly Tuesday Thingers question, the Boston Bibliophile asked us who our LibraryThing authors are. What is a LibraryThing author? Simply put, “an author who lists their personal library on LibraryThing.”
I wasn’t even sure how to find out the answer to this question (I learn more about LT each week with these questions!), but it’s straightforward, just go to your LibraryThing profile (here’s mine) and look in the right-hand column. In the Member Connections box your LibraryThing Authors are listed underneath Friends and Interesting Libraries.
After reading several dozen responses to the Tuesday Thingers question, I realized that my paltry two authors paled in comparison to some of your lists! I decided to start a Challenge to increase my author listings, and invite you to join me. Here are the guidelines:
- The LibraryThing Author Challenge runs from September 1 – November 30, 2008 (a full three months!)
- Make a list of LT Authors and books that you’d like to read (keeping in mind that the list of possible authors is always growing, so your wish list may change)
- Crossovers with other Challenges are allowed
- Post your reviews on your blog and on LibraryThing
- Leave a comment on this post with a link to your blog post about this Challenge
Now, a few housekeeping items:
- This is the first Challenge I’ve put together – please let me know if I’ve left out any details!
- At the end of the Challenge I’ll give a $20 gift card (your choice: IndieBound, Borders, Barnes & Noble or Amazon) to one random winner; one entry per LT Author book completed according to the above guidelines
- I’m not heavily technical – if one of you is willing to create a logo that we can all use for the LibraryThing Author Challenge I’ll give you 5 entries into the gift card drawing as a “thank you!” *** update 9/2/08 – we have a graphic (see above) … thanks, Lenore and Daniel! ***
I jotted down a quick list, and will add to it over the next week as I review all the great postings from this past week:
- The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff
- Aberrations by Penelope Przekop
- Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos

Sounds fun

I’ve put your graphic as a link to this post at the top of my sidebar. I suspect that’s not what you want. Do we write a post about the challenge, including our current list of LT authors and books and put a link back to this page in the post?
After a few posts it will disappear to the bottom of a long scroll, and even be archived after a week or a month. How do I keep it prominent for 3 months? Sorry to ask but I cannot figure out the technical aspects and I’d really like to do this.
Thanks in advance.
Sandra – thanks for asking! I’m adding more flourishes to my blog in regard to the LT Author Challenge – I had to wait for some quiet time over the weekend.
The graphic looks great. I’m putting one in the sidebar, and, since I’m hosting the challenge, I’ll not only list the books I hope/intend to read/review (striking thru as each is complete), but will also list/link in the sidebar to the participants.
You may want to list your intended books in a post, linking back to this one, as well as listing on your sidebar under the graphic.
I’ll call for an update at the end of each month, Sept – Nov, so I’ll have a new post you can link to with a summary to date (“in sept I read x y and z for the LT author challenge”
I’ve modeled this on a few other challenges I’ve seen, so I hope it only sounds complicated, but will be easy once we get going!
[...] (Shameless self-promotion): Marie’s question last week revolved around the LibraryThing Authors in our LT libraries. I was surprised to see how few I had, and created the LT Author Challenge to encourage myself and others to increase our numbers. Each new LT Author book read/reviewed/posted will count as an entry into a drawing for a $20 gift card for (what else?!) books. Details are here. [...]
I hope it’s not too late to join in this challenge! I will blog about it soon (and come up with a tentative list). Should there be links in your list under the LT Author Challenge logo?
I’m in for real! I posted about the challenge here. Please add me to your list of folks doing the challenge. Thanks!

I want to do this just so I can have an excuse to put Lenore’s husband’s adorable graphic on my blog. Can I include reviews I’ve already posted but read since you started the challenge? And how do I find out which authors that I want to read are LT authors, do I have to look them up individually?
I’m glad you’re joining, Ali! Yes, it’s a great excuse to put that graphic on your sidebar (I always think of “Emmy” when I see it).
I posted the challenge on August 29, so I’ll say, yes, and LT Author reviews posted that day or later will count.
You can look up a list of LT Authors here:
http://www.librarything.com/librarything_author.php (then sort by name, seems to be the most straight-forward).
Write a post about the challenge, linking back to this one. Then for each LT Author review you write, link here also.
I’ll be posting an update at the end of the month, so we can check the “standings” then.

I reviewed The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff here as part of this challenge! I’ve also read two other books that qualify; now I just have to write the reviews before the end of the month!
Here’s my second review for the challenge (for Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos). One more to go…
Ok – I finally have a second entry to post here: http://presentinglenore.blogspot.com/2008/11/book-review-guernica-by-dave-boling.html
Wish I could have fit more in, but my scheldule has been really insane!
Thanks so much for hosting Dawn
