I posted my review of this page-turner yesterday, the day the paperback edition was released.
There’s so much to talk about with this book; it’s a perfect pick for book groups. You could get deep into the atrocities of the 1942 Vel’ d’Hiv’ event and its aftermath, talk about why parts of history are considered “taboo” by some people who turn their heads … is it akin to condoning an event if we do nothing to stop it?
There’s the contemporary angle: The protagonist in the 2002 thread of the novel faces not only her own reaction to the secret she has discovered, but condemnation from others who feel she is meddling. Other personal issues are raised – how does one handle infidelity (similar question to “how does she handle the secret?”; do we ignore it or confront it? How does a marriage survive when spouses do not agree on major decisions such as whether or not to bear a child? Does weathering an emotional storm together bring people together or tear them apart?

This book sounds like it raises some tough questions. I just went and read your review, and wow – I really want to read this now! I love historical fiction, and have read a lot of novels about WWII and the holocaust. This sounds like it would be a great read.
I am so very curious about what happens to Sarah(and her brother). Hopefully I win a copy of this book but if I not I’ll definitely be buying it.
I am very interested in reading this group and am very curious about the meaning behind the title. I would love to share this book with my book club.

I’ll ask a question, although you don’t have to answer. I love historical fiction, but it often makes me cry. Do you cry over books, and if so, did this one make you cry?
I would love to be entered to win this book. I am so intriqued to read about a historical event I wasn’t aware happened, I read so much historical fiction I am surprised this is new to me. As far as the questions raised in your review, I do have an opinion, I don’t think a marriage has much of chance if the partners can’t agree on major decisions as big as having children. Thanks for the chance to enter.
This sounds like a very good read! I tend to stay firmly in the relm of historical fiction (and historical non-fiction), and I have a soft spot for Holocaust stories. It is something that moves me very much. But this is about an event that I know nothing about, and I am intrigued to know more.
This book combines what I find most intriguing in a book – strong female characters and historical fiction that breathes life into history, allowing us to get intimate with their lives during a historical time period.
I would love to read this book by getting copy. Many thanks!
Please enter my name!
Sounds great! I’d love to win a copy…
I think a book like this may help answer the question that came up at our book group about the after-effects of the war and why not only collaborators suffered. Signing an armistice doesn’t mean a war stops there.

Since visiting Paris this summer I’ve become obsessed with reading everything and anything about Paree. Thanks for the heads up!
The book sounds intriguing, especially after all the questions you raised.
When I first read the summary of this book, I thought of Anne Frank, even though I know the story isn’t the same at all. Haha. Just a random thought. Please enter me in the contest. Thanks. =)
Thanks for the review! This book sounds very good and I love these types since I love historical fiction. Thanks!
This books sounds very interesting! I love fictionalized history where you track families through the generations and I also like mysteries! Sounds like a perfect fit! I would like to be entered to win a copy of the book.

How does a marriage survive when spouses do not agree on major decisions such as whether or not to bear a child?
This is something that my husband and I have dealt with. I would love to read this book just to see that question answered in the “fiction” world.
Thanks for the chance!
I’d love to win this book!
I’ve always had a fascination with WWII and the holocaust for whatever reason especially the stories of people involved in that period of world history be they fiction or non.
Please enter me for this book.
Thanks.
This sounds like my kind of book – my book group usually prefers female authors and intelligent writing – so this sounds like it might be just right.
Thanks,
