caite - that opinion seems to be the trend for those of us who have read *Bel Canto*. Others who were reading *Run* as their first Patchett novel didn't struggle with it so much (she *is* a very talented writer; Bel Canto raised the bar very high!)

I very much like Bel Canto....perhaps I will leave Patchett for the time being on a high note.

Anna - I'm right with you! Patchett's writing is beautiful; her prose and style match the emotions in whatever she's writing (I'm thinking of the Kenya running scene in *Run*).

The comments over at Gayle's book discussion page cover quite a range, don't they?!

I've seen mixed reviews of this book. I liked it, but I also agree with what you said about the morals and symbolism not being subtle. Patchett's writing is beautiful, and I think that's the main reason why I enjoyed it so much. I added the link to your review to mine.

Kathy - The group who read it with *Everyday I Write the Book* was pretty evenly split; have you read the comments there? (I don't want to be wholly responsible for the death knell!)

Serena - I avoided this review for so long, because I couldn't put my finger on it. Finally, I think it was so heavy with the "lessons" that bothered me. Patchett's prose are beautiful, so I tried to take away some of that as well.

Shana - Have you read *The Magician's Assistant*? I don't own it, so I can't leaf back and pull examples. The premise of a "secret life" was a good one. I remember that Sabine, the main character, had a scene that I found unlikely and didn't add to the story. Let's chat about it after you've read it ...

Dawn, how would you compare Run to The Magician's Assistant in terms of how much you enjoyed them?

Great review, by the way. I think I'll read this one simply because I love Patchett's prose so very much. I know I could never love it as much as Bel Canto though.

I reviewed this book earlier and it didn't sit well with me either! There was something about it that bothered me.

I've been sitting on the fence with this one, so I think I'm going to skip it. There are just too many other books out there calling my name.
