OK, it’s not really a pub crawl, it’s a pub challenge.
Before you stock up on beer nuts and hot wings, you need to understand that pub in this case refers to publication date. Michelle at 1morechapter is hosting a challenge for books published in 2009 (start planning now!)
Here are the 2009 rules:
- Read a minimum of 9 books first published in 2009. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2009, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2008, and then published in the USA in 2009, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2009. Any questions on what qualifies? Just leave a comment here, and I’ll respond with the answer.
- No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
- At least 5 titles must be fiction.
- Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
- You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.
- Sign up HERE using Mr. Linky.
- Have fun reading your 2009 books!
Here’s a list of the books I have on tap for the pub challenge; I’ll add others as the year unwinds:
Beat the Reaper
Something Like Beautiful
The Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
Glamour
Losing My Religion
The Believers
The Weight of a Mustard Seed
I Had to Row Across the Ocean
Head over to this post to add your name to the Mr. Linky for the 2009 Pub Challenge. I’ll take a tall draught!
My completed books, with links to reviews:
- The Brightest Moon of the Century by Christopher Meeks
- Best Intentions by Emily Listfield
- Beat the Reaper (audiobook) by Josh Bazell
- How Not to Look Old by Charla Krupp
- Unpolished Gem: My Mother, My Grandmother, and Me by Alice Pung
- The World in Half by Cristina Henriquez
- The Game On! Diet by Krista Vernoff and Az Ferguson
- The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand
- Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler

Dawn, I’m going to do this one too. I’m still coming up w/ my list of books but Something Like Beautiful and The Weight of a Mustard Seed are both on the list already.
Is there a list of books that will be released in 2009 online somewhere?
I second Shana’s question…I’m going to join this challenge, but I have no idea what books are coming in ’09!
Shana and Swapna – here’s a confession of a true book geek … I keep a spreadsheet of books I’m interested in. Columns are title, author, how I heard of (or requested) it, date requested, date rec’d, publication date, publisher, format (hardcover, ARC, etc.), date review posted and other notes. The rows show up in green if it’s been reviewed, red if it’s not yet published, and black otherwise. Geeky, yes, but I can sort the hell out of it
I pulled my 2009 titles from that list.
I think Michelle at 1morechapter said the challenge is for at least 9 books first published in 2009, and your list can grow/change throughout the year.
I say, “jump on, join in” (from one of my favorite children’s books, *The Fabulous Flying Fandinis*) … figure out your book titles as you go!
I’ll be seeing you ladies at the ‘pub’.
I tried to find some publication lists for next year and came across this. It might be a place to start. If I find some more links I’ll come back and post them.
2009 book catalogs
Marcia – I’ve seen the Knopf catalog online too. Most publishers probably have their “coming Spring 2009″ lists up. I guess I was taking the lazy route, since I know I’ll have no trouble finding books published in 2009. Looking at thos lists I feel like my kids going thru the ToyRUs ad and making a list for Santa!
Dawn – all I have to say is OMG – finally someone who is as anal retentive and likes lists as much as I do
Hehe, I’m a list person too, and love Excel. It’s probably left over from my days as a financial analyst.
Thanks for the suggestions ladies.
I know I want to read Michelle Moran’s Cleopatra’s Daughter too, if it comes out in 2009 which I assume it will.
I’ll sign up w/ those three then add to the list as I go along like you suggested Dawn.
Swapna – I’ll take that “anal-retentive list-lover” comment as the greatest compliment
Shana – I’m sure we’ll have no problem finding books published in 2009!
Let the games begin (I always liked “quarters”)
Glad to have you on the challenge! I love what you have ‘on tap!’
I just signed up for this one. Since new releases have always been the bulk of my reading material, I am sure to complete this one.
3m – I think we self-confessed “ARC Junkies” will have fun with this!
J. Kaye – See you at the pub!
