My Friend Amy, who brought us Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW), has formalized a great idea – buy books for the holidays!
She’s asking those interested in this challenge to commit to buying books as holiday gifts whenever possible. Some of the reasons for the campaign are:
- Books are a good value for the amount they cost.
Books are diverse. - Giving books makes you look intelligent and cool.
She has set up a blog to promote the idea; as it grows it will have lists of book ideas, suggestions for the non-reader, and a spot where you can ask for a book idea for the reader who has everything.
Now, I just read in Publisher’s Lunch that Random House is starting a “books for the holidays” campaign. Calling it a
“got milk campaign for books,” the unifying slogan is “Books = Gifts” and it is designed to promote book sales throughout the industry for the holidays. …
… A number of Random House authors–including Dan Brown, Dean Koontz, Christopher Paolini, and Maya Angelou–will appear in promotional video clips (such as Koontz saying, “Books make the best gifts because they keep you in suspense–even after you unwrap them”) set to run on online bookselling sites.
Random House also has a number of print advertisements in place, and expresses an interest to co-promote the idea with other publishing houses.
Buy Books for the Holidays … I think we’re on to something!
Are you planning to buy books (or bookish gifts – bookmarks, magazine subscriptions, etc.) for people this holiday season?

That is so cool!
I am definitely planning on giving books as gifts this year. I’ve already joined Amy’s campaign. =)
I ALWAYS buy books for gifts that I’m known as the Book Auntie!
And I *love* it when I get feedback from the mums or dads who tell me their kid who doesn’t read staying stuck in that book and going back to it again and again
Ahh…that’s job satisfaction for me
I dream of opening my own bookstore one day – boy, will it be fun or what???
Btw, I wanted to tag you for the ABC list of favourite books…
