TEASER TUESDAYS asks you to:
Ready, set, tease:
I’d attempt to make adult conversation, saying something like “I just paid eight thousand dollars for a pair of sandals that don’t even fit me.” Doug would counter, saying that he himself had just paid ten thousand dollars for a single flip-flop he wouldn’t wear even if it did fit him. He was always very combative that way.
This is from a chapter in David Sedaris’ Holidays on Ice, in which he’s talking about his competitive neighbors, who battle over everything from who has better amenities in their home to who sent a more meaningful Christmas card message.
I’m enjoying this book, much more than that other Christmas humor book I wrote about last week. And, yes, I can count … I included the third sentence as an illustration of David’s spot-on dead-pan humor.
What are you reading today?

This one sounds like fun.
I’ve not read any Sedaris but this teaser makes me think I want to. Thanks!
Yours is funny!!
Good teaser Dawn. I’d like to read this one someday.
ooohh.. this is fun! My teaser is from “Double Fault” by Lionel Shriver. (I’ve not been making much headway in it because I’ve been blogging so much…shame on me):
“She didn’t kiss him good night. Willy had been nervous whether her family would like Eric. She hadn’t thought to worry that they’d like him too much.”
I’ve loved both Lionel Shriver books I’ve read previously (The Post-Birthday World and We Need To Talk About Kevin) and this one is good so far but I’m barely in. It is about tennis and a marriage and what tennis does to that marriage.
By the way, I ADORE David Sedaris and just ordered “Holidays On Ice” from my book swap club!
That is a great teaser!
Dawn, I LOVED this book. My favorite story was where the narrator’s mom locked the kids out of the house on the snow day. OMG – that was funny!!! What’s your favorite so far?
Thanks to all who viewed and commented on my Teaser … yes, I enjoyed the book (review to come …). I tried to read it with appropriate pauses, as if I was hearing David Sedaris deliver it (some of the stories read smoother than others).
Shana – my favorites are the one you mentioned, SantaLand, and Dinah the Christmas Whore. I think I like these because they aren’t over-the-top (I can imagine these things really happening, and Sedaris puts a great spin on them)
