Is it too bold for me to think that some of you have missed me this week? After NaBloPoMo (which I NaBlew in the first week, but I kept going), when I posted almost every day in the month on November, She is Too Fond of Books has been remarkably dark and quiet these past few days.
I’ve been under the weather with my first ever migraine (48 hours of hell!). I have renewed empathy for any of you who suffer from these.
Apparently, my migraines are the result of hormonal changes andmy entering into a “new stage of life.” That’s how they say it at the doctor’s office, you can hear the quotation marks around the words, and they come out with an audible whispery hiss. I’m 43 for crying out loud, not ancient! Stop talking about me like I’m a gallon of milk that was left out on the counter too long!
Things they tell me I should avoid:
- chocolate
- caffeine
- aged cheeses
- red wine
Hello?! What am I supposed to eat now?! Bread and water, the prison diet?! Bran muffins and prune juice?! “New stage of life,” indeed!
(deep breath). OK. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Back to books. Here’s what you can expect to see around here in the next few days:
- review of Holidays on Ice
- Spotlight on Bookstores / guest post by Joyce Hinnefeld (In Hovering Flight)

Well, I allowed myself 30 minutes on the laptop this afternoon … going thru the e-mail that has piled up and writing this post has eaten up my time (must learn to type even faster!). See you later, folks, this old lady has to rest!

Sorry to hear that you’ve been under the weather.
I listened to Holidays on Ice and thought it was hilarious.
O my! Hang in there! I’ve only had one migrane and thought I was going to die. Speaking of…I surely would if couldn’t have coffee, wine, and cheese…and chocolate! Hmmm…after dinner tonight I’ll have all of those just today!
Big hugs to you!!!!!! (((((((((Dawn)))))))))
I DID miss you and almost emailed you, but then you were the only wonderful and nice person who responded to my request for help last nice. I hope you feel better soon, friend.
I’m one of those ‘lucky’ people who get a migraine every month. *joy* They’ve told me to avoid all of that too, but I have a 2 year old… I’m supposed to function without caffeine and/or chocolate? bah!
I’ll be on the lookout for new posts. Glad you’re feeling better.
First time my doctor said the phrase “new stage of life” I nearly slapped him – that was when I had just turned 30 and he recommended a new type of multi-vitamins for bone health – it made me feel like a decrepit old lady :/
I’m looking forward to your reviews of Holidays on Ice (which I cannot wait to get my hands on) and The Green Beauty Guide (I think Sugar Mommy Scrub is the best scrub ever!)
Sorry to hear about the migraine. I get them often and am supposed to avoid the same foods. I do pretty well with the red wine and chocolate, but the world really does not want me off caffeine … oh no, no, no.
Boy, those doctors sure know how to ruin a person’s fun. Glad you’re feeling better, though!
Okay, I gotta tell you that despite your migraine (sorry to hear ’bout that one), I laughed for a full 30 seconds reading this post (esp. Na-blew). Seriously….we’re talking belly-laughing, making-my-kids-turn-around-and-stare-at-me laughing here.
I do hope you’re feeling better soon. And screw the doctors and their “diets.” Eat what you feel like – you’ve earned it!
Everyone’s migraine triggers are different, so you might not need to give up any of those things. Caffeine in moderation actually helps mine. I don’t get them much at all anymore. They were worse when I wasn’t getting enough sleep and was stressed (yoga and massage therapy have done wonders). I am not about mid-way through “the change” and have found that as everything else winds down, so too have the headaches.
Anyway, I have much empathy.
Yikes, sorry about the migraines Dawn. I’ve had them all my life and get them really bad now due to those wonderful ‘hormonal changes’. I feel for you completely. Unforunately for me coffee will give me a migraine as will red wine. Coffee I absolutely refuse to give up headache or not. The other stuff every so often I indulge, have a migraine and move on. Hopefully you get very few.
Kathy – I finished reading *Holidays on Ice* last night – it *is* funny! I can imagine it’s hysterical with Sedaris reading it on audio.
Amanda – the trifecta – wine and cheese and coffee (chocolate must be the bonus round)
Amy – thanks for the cyber hugs. I’m in incredibly good spirits today
Kylee – I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was pregnant with our 3rd child (we have 4). Only 1 (maybe 2 …) cups a day, but I HAVE to have it!
Betty and Boo – I went back to coffee this morning. I think I just need to monitor (be aware of) it, so if/when the migraines strike again, I may be able to pinpoint a trigger.
softdrink – yes, the bombarded me with questions: do you drink? smoke? do drugs? what was next “do you rape and pillage?”
Michele – I thought I would write a full post about how I NaBlew it, but we’re a week past November, I’m moving on. Glad you got a chuckle from it.
annie – I re-started my yoga practice after several months off due to injury. good news that this has helped you.
Dar – I so feel for you! I didn’t understand what it meant when someone “had a migraine”. I definitely “get it” now. About a year ago I had an aura – a circle of my vision was *gone* for about 4 hours. That was very scary – they told me it was an asymptomatic migraine; no pain then, though.
I missed you!! Hope you get to feeling better soon.
what the heck is NaBloPoMo? Sorry about the migraine. Ranting is always allowed. Its how we make ourselves feel better when something is bothering us. And You Are Not Old (because if you are then I am right behind you, and I’m not old)!!!
I’m not too big on aged cheeses, don’t drink wine, and can live without chocolate for the most part but I can’t go a day without my Mt. Dew!
I’m going to see about getting The Green Beauty Guide soon.
Oh, Dawn, I’m so sorry about the migraine. I don’t think I’ve ever had one, but I have been known to have headaches that are so bad I’m literally throwing up from the pain (overall, headaches are rare for me) so I kind of know how you’ve been feeling.
I don’t eat much cheese, but chocolate, coffee and red wine would be very difficult to stay away from … good luck with that!
Take care of yourself, girl.
Here’s another possibility…if you wear glasses for reading or other purposes, it may be time for a new prescription.
[...] for the beauty and fashion industry. Now, if she ever writes a book about natural remedies for migraines, I’ll be first in line to buy [...]
Lenore – thanks for the good wishes. I was back to “myself” by Friday.
Bree – NaBloPoMo is National Blog Posting Month, when you challenge yourself to write a (meaningful) post each day. Like I said, I NaBlew it by Day 4
Ladytink – The Green Beauty Guide is great! I’ll be making better informed decisions about my skincare products and cosmetics.
Shana – I went back to coffee over the weekend, but after reading *The Green Beauty Guide* I’m going to -try- to stay off it for a week or so. J is travelling this week, so I won’t be having wine (the “responsible” sole adult in the house!). Look out chocolate and cheese
Serena – great thought, but, I don’t wear glasses and my eyes tested fine a year ago. Thanks for the idea.
darn I tried…lol
Heh. I woke up with a migraine. Know what soothes it best? Caffeine, especially the kind found in Coke. I don’t ask. I just drink and figure I’ll sleep another day… (of course, it’s the ONLY caffeine I do, other than chocolate, which is its own beast).
Sorry it was such a bad one. I’ve yet to wind up in the ER, but I also have an amazingly high pain tolerance — I once walked around for MONTHS with a rib out of joint. (not to mention two painkiller-free childbirth experiences!)
