Congratulations to Karen Vanuska, winner in the random drawing for Robert Roper’s Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and his Brothers in the Civil War.
In her comment, Karen wrote of her long-standing connection to Walt Whitman:
I grew up on Long Island and the first time I heard the name Walt Whitman as a child it was attached to a mall, as in: “Let’s go shopping at Walt Whitman Mall.” Then, in high school, by which time I had finally learned he was a famous poet and had finally read “Leaves of Grass,” I ended up competing in a tennis match at Whitman High School. I kept asking the opposing players, “Where’s Whitman’s house?” They just shrugged. Whitman came into my life one more time — when I was asked to read a poem at my best friend’s wedding in 1990. It was autumn in Connecticut and the ceremony was taking place under a towering old tree that was dripping in leaves of red and gold. I chose to read an excerpt from “I Sing the Body Electric.” Finally, Whitman had come to an appropriately meaningful place in my life.
I would love to read this book about Whitman’s experiences in the Civil War. I remember reading a review of this book earlier this spring and had put it on a yellow post-it so I’d remember to buy it. Of course, it floated away. Thanks so much for reminding me of this book and giving me a chance to win it.
Yes, those pesky Post-Its have a way of unposting themselves after a while!
Karen, I’ve left a note on your blog; please send me an email with your mailing address and I’ll get this in the mail before the holiday rush.

Congratulations, Karen – it sounds like just the book for you!
Thank you so much! I can’t wait till the holiday break. It’ll be at the top of my reading pile and I’ll be sure to devote a blog post to my thoughts.
Congrats Karen!
