Booking Through Thursday: Generosity (in a bookish way)

Do you give books as gifts?

To everyone? Or only to select people?

How do you feel about receiving books as gifts?

Do I give books as gifts?  Yes!  I’ve always given books as gifts (and I especially like to work on building our family’s library at this time of year).  This year, thanks to the efforts at Buy Books for the Holidays, I’ve committed to buying books for as many people on my gift list as possible.

It has been fun to find the best matches for people on my gift list – my sister is getting Julie Gabriel’s The Green Beauty Guide, along with the ingredients to make her natural Hand Rescue Cream; my nephew is getting a book about drawing Manga, along with a drawing pad and colored pencils; my parents are each getting a Sudoku book, mechanical pencils, and a bookstore gift card.

Yes, I’ve resorted to gift cards in some cases!  I find it very difficult to purchase things for my parents at this stage; they seem to have ‘everything!’  My Dad will probably use his to buy some computer reference book that I wouldn’t know how to pick out, and my Mum will get something practical, like a new address book (she likes the “old fashioned” kind she can keep in a handbag; all my contacts are in Outlook!), or a new book that she just can’t wait for at the library.

As far as receiving books myself … bring it on!  I haven’t been very good about keeping up the “wish list” on my blog (New Year’s resolution: must link in to an Amazon wish list to make updating this easier!), but I think my friends and family know me well enough to be able to figure out what kind of books I might like.  (Note to J:  check my blog for the Friday Finds tag, or recently reviewed books by authors who have other works.  You know how organized the bookcases are … if a book isn’t on the shelves, feel free to fill in the gaps!)
