Mailbox Monday: December 29, 2008

Mailbox Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Marcia at the Printed Page.  There are several books that have found their way into my home this past week, including:

Nothing Right, a collection of short stories by Antonya Nelson; to be released by Bloomsbury in February 2009.

After the Floods was sent to me by the author, Bruce Henricksen.  The novel, published in 2008, is “set partly in post-Katrina New Orleans and partly in a fictional MN town that has suffered its own disaster. It offers a hopeful and even amusing take on the themes of recovery and moving on. Magical realism adds elements of the odd and the comical.”

I’ll be reading The Vigorous Mind (Ingrid E. Cummings) for a TLC Book Tour on January 28.  This book has the subtitle “Cross-Train Your Brain to Break Through Mental, Emotional, and Professional Boundaries”

I received a copy of Kelly Corrigan’s memoir The Middle Place.  If you haven’t yet read this post, grab a tissue and click over now.

I posted here about The End of the Alphabet, the novella that was in my Secret Santa Swap.  I also received a $25 Barnes and Noble giftcard that I won in a drawing from Becca at Bookstack!  Thanks, Becca!  My kids are off school this coming week, so I’ll either take a field trip with them, or work in a date night with my husband.  I love to browse, and will be sure to cross some items off my wish list!

What books arrived on your doorstep, in the mailbox, or under the Christmas tree?

  • Wow, looks like a great bunch of books. This one, After the Floods, sounds like it would be interesting.

    Happy Reading.

  • You have some neat books to read. I always enjoy reading your blog as I get so many new ideas for books. The Vigorous Mind sounds interesting — I’m always looking for a way to combat “mommy brain.” And The Middle Place sounds good but I think I would have to be a certain place to read it. Thanks for sharing! And thanks to you, I’m partiicpating in Mailbox Monday this week!

  • Serena – I love having the variety in my “at home” library … being able to pull whatever fills my reading hunger on any given day.

Jenners – my blog is a big weapon in my battle against my “mommy brain!”. I recently read *The Artist Within* which was a lot of fun to play with some of the creative exercises. I’m generally not a “self-help” book type of person, but these two did appeal to me. Glad you’re joining Mailbox Monday!

  • The Middle Place is one of the best books I read this year. It’s not as sad as you may think. There was a good amount of humor as I remember.

  • I just got Nothing Right today. Have fun with your kids!

  • I got Swallowing Darkness by Laurell K. Hamilton, Tales of the Beedle Bard by J. K. Rowling, Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaugh, and The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion by Alice Kimberly for my birthday/ Christmas. I haven’t been home in two weeks so I have no idea if anything is waiting on me there.

  • Dawn, don’t forget to let us know what you get with your B&N gift card!
