Friday Finds: January 9, 2009

Friday Finds is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should be Reading

I’ve seen ads for the film The Reader based on the book of the same name by Bernhard Schlink; I thought, “I’ll have to read the book before I see the movie,” which generally means that I’ll end up renting the DVD months down the road.  Then I read this review over at My Friend Amy’s and knew I had to add the book to my wish list right away … then to my TBR stack … then to my nightstand!  Maybe I’ll see the film on the big screen after all, instead of Netflix.  Another bonus – it will fit nicely into the War Through the Generations Challenge.

Jill at Breaking the Spine had a Booking Through Thursday post with her list of “the best” books of 2008.  Since I agree with her choices of Tomato Girl and Olive Kitteridge, and Loving Frank is waiting for me on the bookcase … I’m adding her other two picks, which are:

Trail of Crumbs by Kim Sunee, which just came out in paperback, and …

The Distance Between Us by Bart Yates

What books were added to your wish list this week?

  • OK, I swear I didn’t read your FF post before I posted mine!

Check mine out here for a bit of déjà vu…

Guess we’ll just have to chalk it up to great minds thinking alike (*grin*)!

  • So glad you’ve added those two to your list. Thanks for stopping by my blog to see my picks. I can’t wait to read what you think about them!

  • That’s so funny. I thought I was reading avisannchild’s post again when I saw yours. I hope you enjoy The Reader, I certainly did. I agree with you about Tomato girl, I just posted my review of it this week. I read Jill’s post too and her finds do look good.

  • I can’t wait to read Trail of Crumbs – it looks so good.

  • Nicole

I think I’ll put The Reader on my TBR list too — the list is getting longer. It’s a cold and cloudy day here in Georgia — I think I’ll make some tea and read a book.

  • Avis and Sandra – isn’t it funny how Avis and I overlapped this week?! I’m sticking with the “great minds think alike philosophy”!

jill – and you inspired more than just me (see Avis’ comment and post)

Kathy – I have to add the amazon “wish list” widget to my blog. I’ve given up on adding the titles by hand … I wish for too many books (I am too fond of them, after all!)

Nicole – enjoy the afternoon …what are you reading?

  • Dawn, I think you’ll like The Reader. I did and am looking forward to the movie!

  • Shana – there are several books-into-movies that I’m interested in … The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire (the name of the original book escapes me right now), and of course I’ve read, but not yet seen, Revolutionary Road.

  • The Reader sounds so good. I want to try to read this one for the WWII challenge and definitely before I see the movie.
