Thanks to Lisa Roe, the Online Publicist, I have a review copy of Notes on Democracy (A New Edition) by H. L. Mencken to share with one lucky reader.
Here’s the back-of-the-book blurb, which looks at the original, written over 80 years ago, and compares it to an eerily similar political and economic climate we’re facing today:
H.L. Mencken, America’s greatest journalist and critic, wrote Notes on Democracy over 80 years ago. His time, the paranoid and intolerant years of World War I, Prohibition and the Scopes trial, is strikingly like our own. Notes isn’t just a blast from the past, but also a perceptive and unsentimental report on contemporary life.
Dissident Books is proud to reintroduce this gem of cynicism and clear-thinking to a new generation. Mencken performs a brilliant, merciless and often hilarious vivisection on that most holy of sacred cows: democracy. The new edition is supplemented by extensive annotations that put Mencken’s words and ideas in context and expose fascinating details and nuances.
Heather, at Age 30+ … A Lifetime of Books, had this to say in her review of Notes on Democracy: I think this is an excellent book to read if you are interested in American politics today. Regardless of your party affiliation this book will give you lots of things to consider.

sounds really interesting and I am learning about democracy at school so it would be a great tie in
This book sounds fascinating. The first time I heard of H.L. Mencken was on an episode of Gilmore Girls.
The main character, Rory was an avid reader of great books & classics, so I loved the show and took note of the books. I would love to read this book!
I’d love to give this to my 22 yo son. I think he would enjoy the cynicism.
If it is history and politics, consider me drawn.
Please enter me in this great giveaway. It would be nice to relearn a little history after being out of school for many years.

this would be a great gift for one person on my list who’s really into this type of stuff.
Given the current global/economic climate I would find it not only fascinating but comforting to know more about how we transcended a comparable time in our history and lived to see the next century.
I like books that offer a perspective from the past. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Please enter me in the drawing. I’m always fascinated by past perspectives and how often they are applicable to contemporary life.
