Welcome to Mailbox Monday! This is not my mailbox, my snowbank, my house, or my snowsuit-clad child! I pulled the picture from the Parade magazine website after looking for a “mailbox in the snow” pic. I didn’t want to post mine, since the snow is not freshly-fallen and looks, well, dirty like the snow in this picture. The perspective of the child checking the mail tipped the balance for this one (even with dirty snow).
With the disclaimer behind me, let’s see what came in my mailbox this past week:
I received Street Gang: The History of Sesame Street by Michael Davis, from the publisher. Just a few weeks ago I reviewed the re-issued Free to Be … You and Me; now, if someone would write a book about Zoom, I’d have my childhood trifecta on the bookcase!
I won a raffle from J. Kaye’s Book Blog! LW12 and I are looking forward to exploring Cool Jewels: Beading Projects for Teensby Naomi Fujimoto.
St. Martin’s Reading Group Gold sent me Kristin Hannah’s novel
Firefly Lane as part of their Early Access program.
Do you know what metafiction is? According to Wikipedia, it is “the literary term describing fictional writing that self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in posing questions about the relationship between fiction and reality, usually, irony and self-reflection.” Ara 13 sent me his novel Drawers & Booths, which uses techniques of metafiction by having the characters reflect on their role as characters in a novel, as well as addressing the reading audience. I’m reminded of The Office, in which the television characters speak directly to the TV viewers (or, in the case of Jim, raise their eyebrows and give a cute smirk). I’m looking forward to reading Drawers & Booths, which is in a new-to-me format.
What’s new on your bookcase?

Firefly Lane was the first book of Kristin Hannah’s that I read, and I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to her latest, True Colors.
I remember Zoom! I loved that show! Drawers & Booths sounds really interesting – I’m looking forward to hearing what you think about it.
I also received Firefly Lane from St Martin’s Reading Group — it is a great read! Towards the end of the book, I was soo engrossed and stayed up to the wee hours to finish the book.
I love the cover to Firefly Lane!
jill – that’s a great endorsement — looking forward to more work by the same author.
Belle – ZOOM! Zee Double-O Em, Box 350, Boston Mass Oh-two-one-three-four! Send it to ZOOM!
Nicole – You’ve got to love a book that keeps you up past bedtime!
Avis – isn’t it pretty? It reminds me of what childhood was (supposed to be) like.
I like that cover of Firefly Lane – looks so dreamy.
And, OMG, I was hooked on Zoom! ha,ha.. I hadn’t thought about that one in a while.
I want Street Gang: The History of Sesame Street! I LOVE books like this. I just ordered Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand by Carrie Vaughn and Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine. Also Beyond Books sent me Wonderous Strange by Lesley Livingston.
several people received the firefly lane book and that sesame street book has me intrigued.
I received Firefly Lane as well. Love the Oscar cover. Happy reading!
My book receipts have really slowed down since I stopped accepting review requests. That’s why I started doing Monday’s Movie instead. (Well, that and I love to watch and talk about movies.) Anyway, to answer your question: nothing new in my bookcase this week!
iliana – has the ZOOM song been playing in your head all day? sorry ’bout that!
Ladytink – wow, you have a lot of books coming in!
Serena – the Sesame Street book is one I think I would have loved writing myself. What fun to research and reminisce!
Shana – I like to read the Monday’s Movie posts … I rarely get out to see a film (and I love the button, with that overflowing box of buttered popcorn!)
I got Firefly Lane, too. The Sesame Street book looks awesome!
Thank you for stopping by the ‘mailbox’ this week. Great mailbox picture! I read, and very much enjoyed, ‘Firefly Lane’ but then she is one of my favorite authors.
I just saw Street Gang at Borders last weekend. I don’t own it yet, but I can’t wait to read it. I’ll be eager to hear what you think of it.
Firefly Lane is wonderful. It was one of my favorites from last year.
