Mailbox Monday: February 2, 2009

Welcome to another edition of Mailbox Monday, hosted by Marcia at the Printed Page.  Here’s a peek at some of the books that have come into my hands this past week (and, no, that’s not my child struggling to put a letter in the snow-covered mailbox, I downloaded the photo from the Internet).

Our “tween” has been practicing at being a teenager for years, it seems!  We’ll hit the real deal in May.  Peter L. Benson’s book Sparks is subtitled How Parents Can Ignite the Hidden Strengths of Teenagers.  It speaks to me!

Another book that came my way is Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?: From Projects to Prep School by Charlise Lyles.  This is the type of personal memoir that really appeals to me.  In brief: “Born in 1959, on the cusp of what promised to be a new era for African Americans, the author came of age to the words of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. In this stunning memoir, Lyles describes how the programs and promises that came out of this time affected her life.”

Check back later today for a giveaway of Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?   (!!)

I received an ARC of The World in Half by Cristina Henriquez.  This novel will be published April 2 by Riverhead Books … isn’t the cover beautiful!?

A good mix of books for me:  a novel, a memoir, and a parenting guide.  I like to vary my reading between fiction and non-fiction … what do you lean toward?

  • The World in Half sounds like something I’d read, I’ll watch for your review. I’ve read all the nonfiction I want to in my life, I’m just enjoying good literary fiction for now. My MM is up.

  • Dawn, thanks for the recommendation. I have read The People of the Book and I loved it. You have a good idea of what I enjoy reading I think.

  • looks like a good mix up of books this week. I love that cover with blue background and the white flowers that pop off the page.

The memoir sounds good; I can’t wait to see what you have to say.

  • Aha, I mostly lean towards fiction, myself, though I occasionally dab in memoirs and history (my favorite are those slightly ridiculous books about one specific subject that could potentially be boring– like the Oxford dictionary, or bookshelves. Though that bookshelf book WAS boring, unfortunately).

  • Sounds like a good mix! I could use that parenting book myself…

  • I have 2 teens and I wish they wouldn’t “spark” so much! (jk)

I prefer reading fiction – unless it is a biography of some sort. . .

Great list – mine is here: http://booksandneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2009/02/mailbox-monday-222009.html

  • Sparks sounds like a good one. I hope it helps you survive the teen years.

  • Sandra – I just can’t put *The People of the Book* down! She’s reading at a local store on 2/8, I hope I can go …

Serena – I just listed a giveaway for the memoir, including a link to the first chapter online, to see if it’s a good “fit” for you.

Anastasia – the non-fiction I enjoy is memoir (personal memoir, not celebrity), social history, and, yes, those books about one subject – the Malcolm Gladwell books and *Freakonomics*, etc.

Lisa – it’s a fine line between taming the spirit and breaking it, isn’t it?!

    Kristi – LOL about sparking!

Kathy – you know I’ll report back on what works (and doesn’t … I know every child is different and responds to things differently)

The World in Half sounds good and the cover is indeed very pretty. I’ll be watching for your review of it.

  • I read nonfiction when I have a smaller chunk of time – much easier to put down, far less 3 am nights! You’ve picked up a nice selection here.

  • Ohhh – I just love those covers on The World in Half! Happy reading.

    :) Wendi

  • Oh!! Thanks for commenting on last week’s Thinger – I’ve got this weeks post up now! ~ Wendi

  • As I remarked to someone else, that novel.. I love the cover. I love getting parenting books too.

I just posted my MM. I’m a little late.

  • Thank you for stopping by the ‘mailbox’ this week. The cover on ‘The World in Half’ is very eye-catching. You’re a month ahead of me on reading ‘People of the Book’. It’s a March selection for ‘By the Chapter’. I hope I enjoy as much as you.
