Tuesday Thingers: self-promotion

Tuesday Thingers is a weekly meme hosted by Wendi of Wendi’s Book Corner.  Here’s today’s question: Do you post links to your reviews? Here on Library Thing, or anywhere else? How else do you like to promote your site?

My Answer: I post links to my reviews here and on LibraryThing.  I don’t post at any of the online bookstores (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.), nor do I use other cataloging sites like GoodReads and Shelfari.  I participate in Semicolon’s Saturday Review of Books each week; that’s a great way to get your reviews seen, and to add to your own wish list!

When I have a book giveaway I post it on my blog, of course, and make a link in the sidebar, so it stays near the top for the duration of the giveaway.  I ask them to post it over at Win a Book, and I was posting it at Up For Grabs, too.  I’ve posted links to my giveaways in the ARC Junkies thread on LT, but I don’t do that regularly (not sure why not!)

I run my weekly (well, most weeks!) series called Spotlight on Bookstores.  I think this is a unique feature.  Bloggers enjoying guest posting, and it’s nice to use the Spotlight index as an ever-growing reference when travelling.

My signature in every email contains a link to my blog.  Hey, it also has a pink rectangle, very similar to that square pink banner in the sidebar.  I’ve joined the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk (60 miles in 3 days!); you can read more about it here.

Other ways to promote my site?  Well, I’ve stopped short of standing by the highway on-ramp with a cardboard sign that says “read my blog!”  I really want to continue to develop a stream of steady readers that I have conversations with and exchange ideas with.  I’m not looking to spike my traffic with one-time visitors.

Go read Wendi’s post; then check the links in the Comments to see what other book bloggers have to say about the topic!  What’s your favorite way to promote your blog?

  • I hadn’t heard about Semicolon’s Saturday Review of Books before today. I’ll have to give it a look. I feel the same way – I’m really not looking to attract a huge crowd to my blog – just a few like-minded bookworms.

  • I did link in Semicolon’s Saturday Review post a few times…and then I guess I just forgot. I must do that regularly. Personally, the cardboard sign is sounding pretty good. ;-)
I agree that I am not looking to spike my visitor count, which is not that hard to do, but rather to develop a group of loyal, regular readers.

  • I should probably do more promotion but I’d rather spend more time on making my content worth reading and then relying on word of mouth.

  • Hmm… I think the best way to promote your blog is to visit other blogs.

  • I just love Semicolon, but find that on the weekend I often forget (or my hubby hides my laptop) to post links to my reviews. That is a wonderful site to find new books!! I always try to visit and comment on a few reviews.

Thanks for stopping by and participating in Thingers last week! I’ve got the post up for this week. ~ Wendi
