I enjoyed both yesterday's review and today's Spotlight. It's so interesting to read of the book business from an author's point of view. His insights coincide with an article in Time Magazine a while back on the future of publishing and bookstores. That was the first time I'd heard of the system of returning books that don't sell. It just seems so archaic but now I can see why it would be difficult for a new author to get his/her books in stores. Lots to think about. Thanks for the good posts.

Thank you, Dawn. While the number of inches of book reviews have shrunk terribly in newspapers across the country--and the poor Rocky Mountain News went out of business altogether last week--a new and interactive age is here, and your website is a great example of what's working. Your passion for books constantly shines through, and someone like me, who started from the edge of the literary marketplace a couple years ago, can now find readers, thanks to your literary blog and others. I appreciate your being in my corner. :)

I also noticed that Vroman's Bookstore has a reaction and a link to this very article. (Click here: http://blog.vromans.com/christopher-meeks-fan-of-indie-bookstores/) We're all connected.

I've been to Vroman's. It is, indeed, impressive.

And btw, there IS a machine that lets a book be printed in the stores. Not a lot of people, if anyone, are using it yet, but it exists. I want to say it's called the Espresso or something similar.

I just put Christopher Meeks' novel on my wish list this week. This is a great guest post, and discussion on the changing book business. I always enjoy visiting Vroman's booth at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, but I haven't yet made the pilgrimage to the store itself - maybe this year!

Great Spotlight and personal story! I really enjoyed the commentary about the wave of the future and the changes that are impacting publishers and bookstores alike.
