You say “poTAYto” I say “poTAHto” …

I’m the kind of girl that highlights grammatical errors in our junk mail, and leaves it for my husband to see.  J is the kind of guy who would laugh at a bank that offers “overdaft” protection (or, at least grin wryly, and make it sure it wasn’t our bank sending out such a solicitation!  We’re daft enough as it is!)

I must be really cranky today, since I allowed myself to get irked by an error on my daughter’s reading log.  The school is having a read-a-thon, and the kids have to log (title, author, number of pages) each book they read.

The log says “Turn this paper into your teacher by Friday.”

I tried to be lighthearted:  ”Abracadabra, Abraca-deacher, turn this paper into my teacher!” I chanted, waiting to see if LW6 got the joke.  She thought it was funny that I was trying to cast a spell on her reading log, but didn’t understand why I was doing it.

I explained the difference between “into” and “in to” (“everyday” the adjective and “every day” the adverbial phrase get me too).  She said, “oh, I get it!”, drawing out the “I” into an “Ayyyyyyyyyy”, the way kids do when they just want you to stop talking!

Yes, I know that I’m not perfect (gramatically or otherwise), and that I shouldn’t be casting stones.  Here’s an example of one of my red-in-the-face errors from a few months ago:  I was writing a comment on a blog and had to type my name, email, and URL.  Instead of www.sheIsTooFondOfBooks.com I typed www.sheIsTooFondOfBoobs.com… and then I hit enter, sending that dubious message into the cyber archives!

  • Things like that really irk me too, but I’m sure there are plenty of boo-boos like that on my blog.

  • Things like that really get to me as well. I mean, it is a SCHOOL for goodness sake – can’t they have someone proofread the papers they are sending home?! I know I make mistakes, but … I don’t know … it just bugs me.

But that boob thing is TOO FUNNY! Did you happen to try that website to see if it exists?!

  • Awesome typo! Is that actually a website?
Your/You’re errors drive me nuts — so your not alone (Ha! Grammatical humor!)

  • Nicole

    Abracadabra…

Cute error with the url link! did you show that one to “J” ?

  • My nieces live in Costa Rica and attend an English immersion school. (for a variety of complicated reasons–English is their first language) They frequently make English language mistakes on papers and such and my sister is always torn about pointing it out.

That is a REALLY funny mistake you made though!

  • Your boo-boo is too funny! I’m a stickler for grammar too, although I’ve also made mistakes on my blog (one that I only noticed after the author had commented on the review of her book…).

  • Hmmm… The b isn’t THAT close to the k on the keyboard…. ;)

  • One of mine is towards! No such word! Get rid of that S!
This also goes for backward, forward, afterward, etc.
Another is the constant use of then or that. When you’re talking about a chronological series of events, it’s pretty much understood THAT THEN the next event happened!

  • Oh that is too funny!

  • I find stuff like this funny, and sometimes irritating too, but grammar was never my best subject. I’m sure there are tons of errors on my blog!

  • Kathy – I’m sure I have published errors, too. Like I said, I must have been cranky (not enough chocolate?)

Heather – I’ve tried it since reading your comment. No, it doesn’t exist (but now my “auto-fill” on the URL bar wants to select that address; I’ve got to delete the history!)

sarah – have you read Lynn Truss’ *Eats, Shoots & Leaves*? I think you’d like it!

Nicole – I did. He raised his eyebrows and gave me that quizzical look … (you can picture it, right?)

Amy – I don’t remember which blog it was. It was one I didn’t “know” the author, so I felt like I couldn’t send a “would you edit my comment?!?” email!

Avis – I spelled an author’s name incorrectly in my Mailbox Monday a few weeks ago. Just a silly typing-too-fast error. She let me know and I corrected it.

Lenore – I know! Does that make it funnier, or just weirder!??

LuAnn – I’m that way with “regards”, as in “in regards to”. Regards are something you give … like, to Broadway! It’s proper to say “in regard to”, or just “regarding.” Another sticking point for me: “irregardless” … no such word!

iliana – yes, and I laugh at my mistakes :)

Melissa – I may have the grammar police pointing out all my errors, after writing this post!

Dave – I was thinking the same thing after I read Lenore’s comment and I took a look at my keyboard! Yikes!

  • OMG That’s hilarious! boobs! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted errors in junk mail but I do point out errors in store signs or books or magazines, especially if they are funny. I’m sure there are errors on my blog too, although I hope most of them would be typos, not that I don’t know the proper spelling/grammar. I don’t claim to be perfect though.

  • Callista – don’t get the idea that I read every piece of junk mail that comes into the house — sometimes these things just jump out at me!

Shana – I’m here to entertain :) When my kids roll their eyes at me, I know I can count on some blog readers to laugh with me.

  • Nyuk. Nyuk. How did I miss this post? Yes, I will include it in my hall of shame. Thanks!!! (And yes, bloggers are writers, too!)
