Ah, summer will soon be upon us … weeks of fun in the sun and lazy days of … well, whatever comes your way. But what about rainy days? Or the hours in the car driving to the beach? Or days when the kids have had enough outdoor time and want to relax inside?
Then it’s time for a great audiobook! Courtesy of Hachette Audio I have 3 unabridged copies of Mr. Popper’s Penguins to give away! This classic was first published over 70 years ago, and is recommended for ages 9-12 (probably can get away with a little younger in audio, IMHO); here’s a bit about it:
Mr. Popper dreams about leaving his boring life and going on an adventure to the Antarctic. When the legendary Admiral Drake sends him a live penguin in response to his letter, he is thrilled. Very soon, he also receives a female companion for his penguin and they have 10 children. But Mr. Popper has enough trouble supporting his human family, and so he has the idea to take his penguins to the stage. Soon, Mr. Popper is up to his ears in adventure as he tries to manage 12 performing penguins and the trouble they inevitably get into.

I LOVED this book as a child – it was one of those that I reread over and over. I’m sure Kiddo would love the audio version so please enter me. We’re looking forward to a Disney vacation this summer!
At first I thought it might be a little juvenile for my kids, who are 9 and 11. But if the recommended ages are in this ballpark, I will give it a go. My kids love listening to audio books in the car. They haven’t watched a movie on the entertainment system in a long time!
The one thing I am looking forward to in summer is to catch up on my reading pile. What can I say? I am a dork!

I’m most looking forward to our trips to Hershey Park and celebrating my daughter’s birthday. It’s always so much fun to play the party and watch how much fun she has.
