Book Giveaway: *Off Season* by Anne Rivers Siddons

off-season

We have another book giveaway!  Five copies of Anne Rivers Siddons’ Off Season are up for grabs, courtesy of the publisher, Grand Central Publishing (Hachette Book Group).

Here’s a synopsis of Siddons’ latest novel:

For as long as she can remember, they were Cam and Lilly–happily married, totally in love with each other, parents of a beautiful family, and partners in life. Then, after decades of marriage, it ended as every great love story does…in loss. After Cam’s death, Lilly takes a lone road trip to her and Cam’s favorite spot on the remote coast of Maine, the place where they fell in love over and over again, where their ghosts still dance. There, she looks hard to her past–to a first love that ended in tragedy; to falling in love with Cam; to a marriage filled with exuberance, sheer life, and safety– to try to figure out her future.

It is a journey begun with tender memories and culminating in a revelation that will make Lilly re-evaluate everything she thought was true about her husband and her marriage.

I’ve read several of her novels, and I’m looking forward to taking Off Season with me on vacation this summer.

The novel is set in Maine … for your entry to the giveaway, tell me, have you been to Maine?  What image symbolizes the state for you?

Giveaway is open to addresses in the US and Canada only; no PO Boxes.

Please remember my new giveaway policy – In order to save admin time, I will no longer be notifying winners via e-mail; check back on July 18 for a post announcing the winners, who will have 72 hours to respond.  Lisa at Books on the Brain has suggested that I add a note to Comments on this post when the names are drawn; I’ll do that, Lisa!  Thanks for the idea.

*** update 7/18/09: Winners were drawn this morning, please scroll down to the last Comment in this post to see if you’re a winner.  This post is now closed to Comments.

I haven’t been to Maine, but it brings beaches to my mind.

  • I’ve never been to Maine, but the images that come to mind are lobstering and everything I’ve read in Stephen King’s books. OH, and now Empire Falls, too. I half expect to find it crawling with monsters and boogeymen, lol…

  • Nicole

Biddeford Pool is a large tidal pool in southern Maine. When the tide goes out, there are lots of little pools for crab and sea urchin catching. There is an old house alongside the road that used to be a coast guard station; the house has such New England ocean character.

  • I’ve never been to Maine, but my parents go back to Bar Harbor every year and I get to look at pictures and hear stories. But I’d also have to say that I think Stephen King is the person I think of when I hear Maine.

    I love this cover!

  • I have never been to Maine but it is one of the states I would like to visit in the future. Whenever I think of Maine, I also think of fishing and all the stuff that goes along with fishing. I also always think of being cold. I wonder if it gets really hot in Maine?

  • I lived in Maine for two years. I lived in Scarborough, Maine right down the road from the beach. Funny when I think of the beach there I think of the sand fleas and of the coolest sea glass! There are two things that I see in my mind when I think of Maine: Lighthouses like Portland Headlight and lobsters (I worked in a restaurant that served massive quantities of seafood). Great giveaway!!!

  • I’ve never been to Maine, although my husband and I have always said that we need to go. My image of the state would either be a big juicy lobster or Stephen King. How’s that for being bi-polar?

  • I love Maine! The rocky coastline, lighthouses, lobster, blueberries…

  • Debbie

I have never been to Maine – but I always think of lobster when thinking of Maine.

  • One of the last vacations my mom and I took together was to stay on the beach in Ogonquit. We stayed in a little motel and just walked the beach. She loved Maine because it reminded her of the small harbor town in Canada where she was born.

I have been to Maine. Many years ago we drove to Maine from Montreal for a week’s vacation at Old Orchard Beach. I had never been to a beach before nor experienced such a wonderful and memorable week. The ocean, the sand, the walks along the shore and the simple but unforgettable meals of lobster rolls at shacks were incomparable. I pine for those summers.

  • Megan

I also have never been to Maine, but I think of beaches, lobster and fall foliage!

  • Michele

I have never been to Maine, but I am excited about a trip there in the fall. I want to see the rocky beaches, the ocean and explore Portland. I like the wild beauty of Maine.

  • Rebecca Cox

Yes, I spent 3 weeks in Bath, Maine learning how to build timber frame houses. Of course, the Lobster roll is the symbol in my mind. We ate one for lunch every day for 3 weeks!! They even serve them in the McDonalds in Maine! We were just talking about going back just to be able to get our fill of Lobster rolls. We traveled from Portland to Calais on the weekends and we stayed in a small one room cabin on the river. I also almost bought out the Halcyon Yarn store in Bath.

  • Lee

I’ve never been to Maine, but it symbolizes summer fun and the beach.

  • Jenny

I have never been to Maine but when I think of Maine I think of the ocean communities.

  • Lesley

Unfortunately, I haven’t been to Maine (but maybe for my one year anniversary with my husband!), but Maine means lobster to me (which is one of the main reasons I want to go there :^). Thanks so much!

  • We drove to Maine with our two older boys (the baby hadn’t been born yet) two summers ago and had a wonderful time. Lots of walks on the beach, trips to get ice cream, and visits to little amusement parks. I’ll go with the image of lobster rolls and Ferris wheels!

  • I have never been to Maine but pictures of it conjure up romantic images. Have wanted to visit since I bought some art work by Richard Herd of a lighthouse in Maine. Also my daughter is called Lillie and I am attracted to all books with the name in it.

  • Margie

Haven’t been to Maine…but my images include lighthouses, harbors, boats, and beautiful seashore!

  • SarahBear

I’ve never been that far east, but like most people would agree, Maine brings Stephen King to mind. I just read ‘The Long Walk’ a few weeks ago, so Maine makes me think about miles and miles of road….

  • Johannah B

I have been to Maine, and I think water and Lobster. I don’t really like either that much — but boy did hubby have a wonderful time as he enjoys both VERY much!

  • Once in Maine I took this really great photograph of Pemoquid Point lighthouse and have it sitting in my drawer waiting to get it framed – I really must do that sometime soon!!

  • I have never been to Maine, but have friends who used to live there and say it’s beautiful. This looks like a great book, and I really want to read your review of it. Please enter me in this contest.

  • Daniel M

  • I love Maine, especially Acadia NP where you can be the first to see the sunrise in the Continental US!

  • Has your oldest read Dairy Queen (1st in the series) and The Off Season (2nd in the series) by Katherine Gilbert Murdock? Maybe she’d enjoy them – they’re popular at my school.

  • Please withdraw my name. I won Off Season from another blog. Thank you so much for the chance.

  • CherylS22

I’ve been through Maine but didn’t really stay for any length of time. The thing that would symbolize Maine for me is the beautiful coastline in Bar Harbor & the ferry that takes you over to Nova Scotia.

  • Donna Sammond

I just finished “Off Season”… it was Siddons’ best yet. I’ve never been to Maine, but my husband used to go when he was a kid on family vacations. I wound love to go there some day.

  • I have never been to maine but beaches and lots of green pop to mind when I picture it

Maine is summer to me. I spent part of nearly every summer of my life in Maine until I married. I miss it terribly. It’s blueberries, the Fourth of July parade in Freeport with the big LLBean boot float, lobster bakes, miniature golf at Rummel’s in Waterville, the cliff walk in Prout’s Neck, sailing on Casco Bay and taking the mail boat run on a sunny day, maybe in the afternoon with music and racing up the dock to grab an ice cream cone at the turnaround point, shopping at the outlets in Freeport, lobster rolls at McDonalds, being old enough to take the boat out alone and fish, catching the biggest fish of the week — until the last 5 minutes, getting all dressed up to go to theatre at Skowhegan….it’s a wonderful melange of memories and feelings that has made me who I am.

  • jacque
