3-Day Thursday: keep those cards and letters coming!

3day_ambassador_badge1Madame Ambassador is back, with the two-week countdown to the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk!  Wow, I’ve been preparing for this event for so many months, it’s hard to believe I’ll be setting out on the first leg of this journey in just 14 days!

This is another audience participation post.  I wrote one last week, when I asked you to tell me who I’ll be walking in honor of, or in memory of.  I’ll be wearing these names on my clothing throughout the weekend.  If you’d like to add a name to my list, just leave a Comment, or email me at dawn [at] sheIsTooFondOfBooks [dot] com.

I plan to post text and photo updates on Twitter throughout the weekend.  You can follow me at @TooFondOfBooks .  Of course, I’ll be sending those updates when I have stepped to the side of the route and am standing still – talking (or tweeting!) on a cell phone while walking is not allowed, for safety reasons.  I’d love to get a tweet or two from you that weekend!

I’ll be sending the Twitter updates via my iPhone, which has a battery life of about one day.  I won’t have access to AC power to recharge the phone during my two nights away, and was hoping to find a (single use?) battery-powered charger to use.  I’ve asked the Mac Geniuses as well as the guys at Radio Shack, but haven’t had any luck.  Is there a AA or AAA powered charger I can purchase to take along with me?mail

Now, who’s good at corresponding via snail mail?  I’ll tell you one person who is – my mother!  She always gets the birthday cards and thank you notes out on time, and is ready to to drop a note in the mailbox when she hears that someone has had a big event in their life, or just needs a lift.  I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t inherit that gene!  If and when I do put something in the USPS mailbox it’s a major feat!

I’m wondering if I can convince some of you to be a little like my mother right now.  As my July 3-Day News says:

There’s nothing like a letter from a loved one to inspire you to keep going. Your friends, family and supporters can write a letter to you, which we’ll deliver to you on the event at the Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office.

Send letters to:
Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office
ATTN: DAWN RENNERT
P.O. Box 8534
Warwick, RI 02888

Envelopes only, please. No boxes or large packages. Mail must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, July 14th in order to ensure delivery at the Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office.

So, yes, I’m putting it out there, to my “loved ones” (Hi, mom!), to the bookish people I first “met” online, and to those of you who might be linking over from another site … I’d be thrilled to get an encouraging note while on the 3-Day route! A standard postcard costs 28 cents to mail; a standard letter, 44 cents.  The boost I’ll get? Priceless!

That’s all for this week, folks!   Look for another 3-Day Thursday post next week!

  • I’m so there! I’ll be in Indiana at the time, but I can write snail mail anywhere. I am so proud of you! This is going to be a great event!

  • I printed out a label – now let’s see if I can be like your mom and use it!

HI! It’s so easy to take your charger with you and stop at convenience stores and other places to get a quick charge-up on your phone. Also, in the foot massaging tent ( after the first day of walking – in camp) there is usually an extra plug available to charge your phone. You have to be sneaky, okay?

God bless you as you walk. I just had a second biopsy and i’m waiting for results. Whatever the results, we NEED to continue looking for a cure, prevention, knowledge, understanding, and just continuing to get betterin treatment. Thanks for walking.

Blessings…. Pamela McGuire ‘06, ‘07, ‘08 Walker in Dallas, Texas

I got a AA battery charger for my iPhone 3G. It won’t recharge, but will maintain power. It’s made by Griffin and called TuneJuice. I think I got it at Best Buy. I’ve nursed my previous phones/smartphones just barely through the 3+ days since 2002. Hope this works for the iPhone. I just started following you on Twitter. I’ll be thinking of you. This year I’m walking in San Diego, even though I live in DFW. We’ve still got miles to go before we start. :)

Personal letters, cards or otherwise are so nice. The cost of long-distance phone calls used to be astronomical (I’m sounding old), we are lucky that the prices have gone down. Although I have unlimited long distance and we are a cell phone only household, I still try and send out cards on occassions and letters randomly. I know we always seem to ask each other, “did we get anything good in the mail.” Good is either a fun catalog or a personal note. When do receive the mail for the 3-day walk, before, during, or at the end?

  • I’m a snail mail girl. Consider it done :)

  • You GO girl! I was telling someone that I *know* someone walking in Boston’s 3-day and they asked me if I was going to go cheer you on. ya know – I just might! if I don’t, not that you would know – I mean really! do you want me to bother you?! anyway, I think what you are doing is AWESOME.

  • Thanks to all for your words of encouragement and support!

I’m looking into the options for TuneJuice, and will bring my AC charger in case I ‘find” an outlet somewhere :)

Nicole – I think any cards/notes will be distributed Friday and Saturday evenings when we’re “at camp.” I know “lights out” is at 9; I don’t expect to be reading under the covers with a flashlight.

Care – I’m emailing you a list of the cheering stations, and info about the closing ceremonies on Sunday afternoon; it would be great to see you there!

Hey Dawn! God luck with the walk! I am looking forward to mine this October in Philly. I too am concerned about the battery life of my iphone while at event. I know of a couple of things I have seen or read about (no personal experience with any of the products). One is called mphone or something like that. It is a case that is supposed to extend your battery life. Then there are also many different companies who make a portable charger specifically for the iphone. I have seen them at the apple retail stores. They seem pretty cool and I was going to look into them once my event got closer. Hope this helps.

Hi Honey, Who says you are not good at writing?? we received a goody envelope in todays mail full of crafts from Little E and a picture of D who gets more handsome each day!!
I WILL send you mail as Dad and I are so very proud of you. You are an inspiration to us to always think of others and to reach out even to those folks we do not know personally.
Dad and I will be with you in spirit-as the bodies here are just not up to walking with you-but we will be cheering you on from home.

  • What you are doing is wonderful! The least I can do is send you encouragement via snail mail.

  • What a worthy idea! Good on ya, mate! Mail takes a long while from here, but you will be in my thoughts.

  • Hiya,

I missed the mail deadline but I’ll be donating to you when I get home (cuz that’s where my credit card is). Good luck!

  • Hiya I can’t get the card donation site to work is there any way I can donate by Paypal?

  • Joy

I think there’s a solar powered charger for cell phones. Radio Shack maybe? We live in hurricane country so I’m pretty sure I saw it on one of the preparedness shows. Think LLBean may also have one.
