Trish over at Trish’s Reading Nook is hosting a 100 Mile Fitness Challenge. I think the timing is perfect; I tend to get sedentary once the days start getting cooler. I’m very motivated by announcing my goals publicly (on my blog, not an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal), and am ready to cheer on my fellow walkers/runners/swimmers.
The goal is to move 100 miles between October 1 and December 31, 2009. You can join any time, do your best to catch up if it’ s mid-October, and contact Trish to see about pro-rating your miles if it’s after November 1. All the details of the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge can be found in this post.
I’m going out on a limb and saying that I’ll hit 150 miles in these 3 months. There’s a progress chart in my right sidebar (scroll down a bit, under Reading Challenges), which I’ll update weekly. To see a spreadsheet with my daily progress, click on this Google Doc for Dawn’s 150 Mile Fitness Challenge.
Do check out the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge blog. Guest bloggers are sharing workout tips, recipe ideas, and motivating stories. Thanks to Trish for hosting, and Softdrink for creating the button.

Yay! See, I just knew you would have to do this. After all, with the 3-Day, this should be a breeze. I also have a personal goal of hitting 150 miles, and a stretch goal of 200. I’m thinking it can’t hurt. After all, my brain is still wrapped around a 3 Day next year!
Good luck Dawn! This looks like such a fun challenge. I am mighty tempted!
I know this is a challenge that I should do — I am just fearful of failure. If I join, I will be lucky to hit the 100 mile mark. Your goal sounds fantastic!
I can’t believe you’ve already got a spreadsheet going! That’s fantastic!
I decided to just see where I end up. If I stay on my ideal walking schedule, I’d get to about 200 mi. But we have holidays coming up, so I think 150 is realistic. Good luck to you!!!
I think I’m going to sign up too! Why not!
I’m there with you! In knowing that 15 minutes of exercise = 1 mile this is very feasible for me. I will need to grab a calculator and figure out a few things; I might be able to aim for the 150 miles… And a question for the fine print and the detailed aunt that you are…I read the details on Trish’s link, but do you how does rowing equate out in miles? rowing 1600m = 1 mile and would take me approximately 9-11 minutes…. does that count as a mile? or do I have to go for 15 minutes? (your neice is also very detailed, and I don’t want to ‘cheat’) =))
Good luck with this challenge, Dawn. It really does sound doable and you set a good goal for yourself.
Sandy – 200 is a stretch goal for me, too (so not set in stone!)
Nicole – Oh, join us! You can walk for miles in the city without realizing it. You might look like a tourist, though
molly – no fear of failure! This is like Outward Bound for book bloggers, we’re all here to support you. Maybe make your goal 60 or 75?
rhapsody – I’m impressed that I was able to make a share-able spreadsheet and get the formula right. That cut and paste in the goal tracker is pretty nifty, too
Beth F – like Sandy, 200 is an unofficial stretch goal. We’re away several days at Thanksgiving, and if I’m out for even 4 or 5 days with illness I might not make it. So far, so good, though (3 days! I take pleasure in the baby steps!)
Stephanie – exactly! Why not?!? Yay, glad you’re joining us!
Nicole – how hard are you breathing when you row a mile? If it’s not as hard as running, I’d say do it by the time. Conversely, swimming is measured in time because it would take longer to reach a mile, and it’s equal aerobic exercise. But, I’m no expert (no kidding, huh!) I’ll email the question to Trish and see what she says.
Literary Feline – It’s great to see so much support from other bloggers – both those who are taking the Challenge and those who are cheering and encouraging.
So far I’m averaging a mile a day. You’ll easily kick my ass at this one. Not that I’m making it into a competition, because I already know that Ding Dongs rule.
Go Dawn! I have to admit, the Pub Challenge is more my style
So glad you are joining us
I’m just hoping to hit 100, good luck to your goal of 150!
Holy smokes 150 miles? Yowza that is an amzing goal. Good luck and much success!
You should totally rock this after doing your Walk-A-Thon earlier this year!!!
okay…so, i’m out of the challenge. … I didn’t keep up with it. =(
On another health note… I received a pedometer from work and i’ve been wearing it to track the # of steps per day I take, not including the gym or working out. I know that you are encouraged to take 10,000 steps/day. And so far I”ve been averaging 5-6K. My grandfather helped me calculate how many steps of mine make up a mile =) he measure it out in our driveway and did some calculations. ~3100 Nicole steps = 1 mile
