It’s happening again! Just as I’m cleaning up some of the graphics on my blog, I’m finding new widgets to take their place. I guess it’s true – nature abhors a vacuum (I do too, but that’s a story for another day!)
A few weeks ago, Julie at BookingMama announced the Shelf Discovery Reading Challenge based on the book of the same name, by Lizzie Skurnick. Actually, the full name of the book is Shelf Discovery: The Teen Classics We Never Stopped Reading. It’s a collection of essays (aside from Skurnick, contributors include Meg Cabot, Laura Lippman, Jennifer Weiner, and others), lauding those books from the late ’60s to early ’80s that impacted readers then, and are still meaningful now. Shelf Discovery has dozens of essays featuring over 70 Middle Grade and Young Adult books.
The Shelf Discovery Reading Challenge runs for six months, from November 1, 2009 through April 30, 2010. Six books are required; lists are fluid, and can be changed at any time. Read Julie’s post about the Challenge for all the details.
Here’s my initial list (yes, I chose seven, but I’m only committing to six!):
- From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
- Harriet the Spy
- Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret
- Little House on the Prairie
- The Endless Steppe: A Girl in Exile
- The Secret Garden
- All of a Kind Family
I’m really looking forward to this trip down memory lane. I’m hoping that my daughter will join me in reading and reviewing some of my favorites. Are you in? What six book will you choose?

I’m not going to sign up officially for this challenge but I do have a few of these books on my tbr – to read for the first time! HAVE FUN.
I’m signed up and I already bought two of the books.
Heck yeah, I’m in! Here’s my post.
Great choices! I can’t seem to decide. They all look so good!
No, I am not in, but if I were, I would also choose 3 and 4!
Good luck to you.
I’m so glad you’re doing this challenge too! I think it’s going to be loads of fun.
