Book Giveaway: *America’s White Table* by Margot Theis Raven

white tableThanks to the generosity of Sleeping Bear Press, I’m able to offer copies of America’s White Table to three readers of She is Too Fond of Books.

This moving and poignant picture book (appropriate for ages 4 and up) tells the significance of the “white table” or “remembrance table” originally set to honor Prisoners of War or MIAs.  The ceremony of the white table has been extended to honor all veterans who have sacrificed for our freedom.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below indicating who the book would be for – your own children or grandchildren? the family of a neighbor who is in the military now? yourself?  Had you known about the white table ceremony before reading my review of America’s White Table?

Giveaway is open to US mailing addresses only, and will be open until midnight EST on Saturday, November 7, 2009.  I’ll announce the three winners (drawn randomly) on Sunday, November 8.

update 11/8/09: The winners, drawn randomly, are:

  • #4 – Angela D.
  • #7 – Heather S
  • #15 – gwendolyn b.

  • Count me in! I would love to share this book with Booking Son and Booking Daughter! I wasn’t familiar with the White Table at all, but I always think it’s a good idea to remember those who have fought for us! Our elementary school has a big Veteran’s Day celebration. We collect loose change to soldiers and we hang flags with veterans’ names all over the cafeteria. We also have an assembly where the kids sing patriotic songs and a veteran comes and speaks to them.

  • I’d love to win this to share with Kiddo. He already has a healthy respect for our veterans and current soldiers so he would really appreciate the story behind this book. Last week at Cub Scouts my 91 yr old Grandpa told the boys the story of his landing on Utah Beach on D-Day and about the battles he fought in and his injury and the friends he lost; this book would be a great follow up to share with the Scouts!

  • Christin

I would love to share this with my two young children…we are a military family and we know several other families with soldiers deployed and this would be wonderful to share with them.

  • Angela D.

I would love to share this book with my 4th grade class. I think it is important teach about our men and women in the military and how important they are to our freedom. I will use this book to also teach symbolism and use it in a creative writing lesson.

I would love to share this book with my 2nd graders. We are planning to perform the White Table Ceremony for our Veteran’s Day Celebration. Our principal is going to video tape it to send onto a Veteran’s Home so they can view our presentation. This book would be a great addition to our classroom library.

The book would definitely be for the little girl I babysit. I would either give it to her or read it to her when I babysit her. She’s only 3 but she’s very smart and LOVES it when we read books together. It can never hurt to read a different type of children’s book.

  • Heather S

This book would be for my Mother, she would adore it, and no I hadn’t heard about it before here!

  • ruth

This book which is wonderful and captivating would be a gift for a special friend whose children would enjoy learning about this ceremony. What a memorable book.

  • I had never heard of the white table ceremony before your review of the book. My girlfriend will be welcoming her husband home in a month, when he will be retiring after his career in the Army. I’d love to be able to give this to her as a gift to mark the occasion.

  • No need to enter me, babe. I’ve never heard of The White Table, though. What a neat thing!

Thanks for the e-mail. For you, there’s ALWAYS time to post, which I did over at Win a Book.

  • This book would be primarily for my niece and nephew, but also for myself! I had never heard of the White Table and would like to learn more. It sounds like a wonderfully gentle way for children to become aware of the sacrifices and achievements of our veterans. Thank you!
