I ran this recipe in the comments sections of one of my blog posts around this time last year. Today it will get top billing … I’ll even add some photos after I make it on Tuesday.
Chunky Cranberry Relish is so easy to make (really: combine, boil, simmer, cool) and a winning combination of sweet and tart. It’s a hit with the Thanksgiving meal, as a condiment on a turkey sandwich, or straight out of the serving bowl!
CRANBERRY RELISH
2 bags cranberries
3/4 cup orange juice
rind from one orange, grated
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
2 Bosc pears, peeled and diced
3 tart apples (Cortland or Empire), peeled and diced
1 1/2 cups golden raisins
Combine all ingredients in a large pot.
Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil.
Simmer 25 minutes, stirring often.
Let cool. (although we tend to taste it while it’s still warm!)
The cinnamon stick is easy to find and pull out before serving; the two whole cloves are a bit trickier … watch out for them! We joke that whoever finds the cloves in their serving of cranberry relish gets to wash the dinner dishes. Yeah, we’re silly that way.

Mmmmmmm. Well, today we are going to have a family vote on the menu for Thanksgiving. It is only the four of us this year, so a slightly lesser feast it will be. But my daughter just said yesterday that I need to please make a yummy cranberry salad. This may be my answer!
This sounds amazing!!! The only problem is that my family likes the traditional one and isn’t big for change! LOL!
This sounds really good! We have two dinners this year. One with friends and a simple one I’ll make at home on Friday. One of the things I bring to the freind’s gathering is the homemade cranberry sauce. I think I’ll make two batches this year — traditional and this one. Thanks so much for sharing it!
I need to make a recipe with apple slices, and am trying to figure out how I can possibly bring myself to be so unlazy as to core and peel apples (I have one of those gadget things, but it doesn’t work very well). I think that’s the good thing about having young children to assist – they think such things are fun. Perhaps you could lend yours out for awhile?
This sounds similar (but better) to a relish I used to make, before going back to the more traditional sauce. I’d like to try this one….maybe we’ll have two this year!
This sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing your recipe with us!
I’m printing this out for my hub to consider. He’s been hilarious lately looking for the ‘right’ recipes of goodies to bring to Thanksgiving (He’s actually very upset we aren’t hosting, but I am so happy I won’t have to clean up.) THANKS!
I make a similar recipe. The only differences are I add a cup of chopped nuts and the zest of an orange and the zest and juice of a lemon.
and I don’t add the pear.
Many in my family love the jellied kind in the can…but I love this one and I am trying to convert a few of them..lol
This sounds lovely – I might make this for Xmas

I like the combination of fruits in this recipe. I’ve always like the combination of cranberry and orange but to add the apples, pears and raisens – yummy. I’m going to try it.
Printed and will be making. Yum!
One word comment = YUM!!
I thought you’d like to know that the recipe has been printed out and voted upon. Chunky Cranberry Relish for Thanksgiving it is!
I have cranberries set aside and the Betty Crocker cookbook open to make sauce tomorrow — I’m glad I was blog browsing I am going try this recipe instead. ~n
I’ve saved this post – I love anything cranberry…and this looks scrumptous!!!!
I remember this recipe! I made it last year and almost ate the entire thing myself (over the course of many leftovers). I plan to make it again this year and already bought all the stuff!
