It’s that time of year … when my steady resolve to resist joining reading challenges caves (falls like a house of cards, the straw that broke the camel’s back, castles in the sand … your choice of over-used simile/metaphor). I expect that the rest of 2009 will have wrap ups of the challenges I attempted in 2009, as well as more posts announcing challenges I’m taking on in 2010.
I saw the 2010 Audio Book Challenge in a post at Heather’s A Lifetime of Books, and said “OK, I’m in!” I think this will be a great way to keep me on track with my treadmill/fitness goals, too. Good multi-tasking, huh?
The 2010 Audio Book Challenge is hosted by Alaine at Royal Reviews. Levels range from Curious (3 audiobooks) to Obsessed (20 audiobooks). I’m joining at the Addicted level, which has me committed (that doesn’t sound right!) to 12 books over the course of the year. Pop over to the link above if you’d like to read the guidelines and join the challenge.
Here’s where I’ll list the books as I listen and review them:
- The Whole Truth by David Baldacci
- A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve
- Sundays at Tiffany’s by James Patterson
- Selected Shorts: American Classics by Symphony Space
- Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace
- A Long Stone’s Throw by Alphie McCourt
- The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris
- Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater
- What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell
- Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
- The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
- Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson
- Homer & Langley by E. L. Doctorow
- The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova
- The Island by Elin Hilderbrand
Do you listen to audiobooks? Where and when? Will you be joining the challenge?

Hohohoho! It’s all good Dawn! I knew when I saw this challenge that “Obsessed” was meant for me. I need to go back and officially count, but I would imagine I read at least 30 or 40 audios this year. They are the perfect way to multi-task. Not only is walking long distances FUN, but so is cleaning the house, running errands and yardwork! Plus, the kids and I always have one going in the car. No fighting, no fussing. Just listening with rapt attention!
I do listen to audio books when I clean house, walk the dog or take a trip. I don’t plan to do the challenge, though. Good luck to you!
I have decided that if I follow through with my resolution to use the treadmill 4-5 times a week, then I will join this challenge, as I expect this will be the way I will pass the time walking to nowhere
I do like audio books and I don’t know why I don’t listen to them more! Using them while on the treadmill is a great idea! I’ve been watching movies to help keep me ‘on track’! Don’t know that I’ll do the challenge but I would like to try and hear more audio books in the coming year. Good luck on your challenge!
No, I don´t like listening to any story as I am not good at concentrating. I can see the advantages for other people, though, when you drive, travel or do the washing up etc. I try to come up with ideas for new stories to write in these situations, however.
hehehe! so glad I convinced you to join this one too!
I listen to audiobooks when I’m driving long distances. My husband and I listened to The Chistmas Sweater (Glenn Beck) a bit ago and we were both crying toward the end of the drive. We’ll be listening to another on Wednesday with our holiday travels. Just an FYI, you can play audiobooks through some GPS systems, we have a Garmin Nuvi.
Awesome challenge to join, and even better multi-tasking. Maybe I need to re-think my approach on this one. LOL
Good luck!
Good luck with the challenge- audiobooks aren’t my thing but maybe I’m just not giving them a fair shake!
I’m the audio queen! Perfect for walking.
I am definitely joining this challenge – and this is one I can almost guarantee I will complete. I listen to audios while driving, exercising, doing dishes, cooking dinner, folding laundry – well, you get the idea! Enjoy your challenge.
Excellent, another challenge I can complete. Thanks for the tip!
I forgot to say that I recently finished Marcelo in the Real World on audio. I’d highly recommend it.
I enjoy listening to audio books all the time. They help me pass the time as well when i hit the treadmill. I would recommend one book to add to your list that I have always enjoyed and that is “Poirot Investigates: Eleven Complete Mysteries.” These stories always seem to draw me in.
most of the time i listen to audiobooks while surfing the net, i love to multitask he he ‘
