Anna at Diary of an Eccentric and Serena at Savvy Verse and Wit created a blog dedicated to war literature and will host yearly reading challenges based on a specific theme; the theme for 2009 was World War II. All the details, including an amazing Reading List, guest posts, and links to reviews are at the War Through the Generations blog.
I committed to reading five books that fit the challenge … how did I do?
- Resistance by Anita Shreve
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

Yes, there are three blank lines; I didn’t complete the challenge!
How do I feel about it? I’m disappointed that I didn’t finish it. I have many books that would have fit the challenge parameters; even children’s books would have been OK. I think I just didn’t take inventory (of where I was as far as progress) early enough, then simply ran out of time!
Kudos to Serena and Anna for running such an organized challenge. The blog is a fantastic resource!
The theme for 2010 is the Vietnam War; all the details (including sign-ups and suggested reading lists) can be found at the War Through the Generations challenge blog.
Did you participate in the WW2 challenge? Will you join for the Vietnam War challenge?

I signed up early in the month. This will be my first reading challenge and way outside the box for me. I’ll start with THE THINGS THEY CARRIED by Tim O’Brien and re-read the Quiet American by Graham Greene (great book). Monday I’m posting about reading challenges to encourage joining.
Dawn, we were thrilled that you participated, even if you didn’t complete it. We hope you’ll be joining us next year!
I’m sorry you didn’t complete our challenge. There’s always 2010 with Vietnam!
I hope you’ll join us again for the new challenge even if you were disappointed by your efforts this year.
Don’t worry you’ll still be eligible for prizes I think….
Bummer! Still, the ones you read were great! There are so many books on this topic, I had a hard time choosing. I am just a tad bit obsessed with the topic, so I think this was one of the first I finished with 10 books. I am also signed up for Vietnam, but it may be more difficult for me, as I’m not as drawn to it. We will see!
Better luck next time!
Too bad you weren’t able to complete this one this year.
Are you signing up for the next one? This was one of my favorite challenges and I’m definitely in for next year as well!
I didn’t do so well on this one either Dawn although I started out with the best of intentions, even had all the books lined up. I believe I only completed two as well. I need to get a few more wrap up posts done. Well two is better than none I say. Better luck next year!
I expected to read so much more than the five books I committed to for this challenge, and I ended up barely finishing that fifth book. We never can be sure the direction our reading will take us, so don’t feel bad about not completing this one. There’s always next year, right?
yeah.. I didn’t finish my War one either, I kinda forgot to read WWII books. It’s amazing how fast the end of the year gets here!
