The Memorable Memoir Reading Challenge 2010

Melissa, aka Betty and Boo’s Mommy from The Betty and Boo Chronicles, is hosting a brand new challenge!

The Memorable Memoir Reading Challenge for 2010 asks participants to read at least four memoirs, letters, diaries, and/or autobiographies during 2010.  Overlaps with other challenges are allowed, as are audiobooks.

I keep thinking that I’ve joining my last reading challenge for the year, then another great one sneaks up on me!  I really like personal memoir (which I distinguish from celebrity memoir); one of my favorites from last year is Nancy Bachrach’s The Center of the Universe.

Yes, I’m on board for the Memorable Memoir Reading Challenge; I’ll track my books in this post:

  1. Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven by Susan Jane Gilman
  2. The Power of Half by Kevin Salwen and Hannah Salwen
  3. Every Day in Tuscany by Frances Mayes
  4. Clara’s Kitchen by Clara Cannucciari
  5. A Long Stone’s Throw by Alphie McCourt
  6. Have I Got a Guy for You ed. by Alix Strauss
  7. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
  8. Talking to Girls about Duran Duran by Rob Sheffield
  9. The Bucolic Plague by Josh Kilmer-Purcell

Do you enjoy memoirs and autobiographies?  Will you be joining the Memorable Memoir Reading Challenge? (c’mon, it’s only four books!)

  • Good luck Dawn! I should do this one too. I know I will have enough memoirs.

  • Yay! I was sucked in as well. To me, this was a no-brainer since I’ve already read two that would qualify. I love good memoirs, and I seem to be on a roll with them, so why not?

  • Nicole (who’s up really early on a Sunday!) – I hope you do give it a try, it will be fun to share titles.

Sandy – I’ll look on your blog for the two you’ve already read (yay!)

  • Julie talked me into doing this one, so I’m in too! Oh, the things we do because of Twitter.

  • I resisted. I need to get a grip on my challenge commitments.

  • This one’s been calling to me to join but I think I’ve reached my limit on challenges. I think…

  • Kathy – Twitter makes me such a follower (and sometimes an enabler)

Beth F – heh-heh … how long will you resist :) (I know, I need to draw limits, too!)

Lisa – I read 7 or 8 memoirs last year, so I don’t expect any problem meeting this one.

  • I love memoirs, and there seem to be so many good ones out these days. Can you tell us which ones you’ll be reading and steer me to some I shouldn’t miss?

  • I don’t often enjoy memoirs, but I like autobiographies a bit more and this sounds like great fun! I’m going to resist, but I’ll have to keep it in mind.

I’ll have to take a look at the memoir you listed in the post. My suggestion to those doing this memoir challenge if “bipolar bare,” by Carlton Davis, about growing up and living with bipolar disorder. He talks about this struggles with it, his struggles to come to terms with it, the sexual deviations and drug use that are part of it and the ultimately hopeful message that he regards his disease as a gift from God. I think many people don’t know that what they think is drug addiction is really mental illness in disguise. It’s a fascinating look at something lots of us don’t know much about.

So that’s one for me, in this challenge!

  • Thank you for letting us know about this challenge. I absolutely love memoirs. Some of my favorites are: The Glass Castle, Buffalo Gal and Big Russ and Me.

  • Sarah – my taste ranges from ‘serious’ memoirs to light and easy. I loved Nancy Bachrach’s THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE, and am almost thru Susan Jane Gilman’s UNDRESS ME IN THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN.

Rebecca – these challenges are hard to resist, aren’t they?!

Liz – thanks for the recommendation.

Kiki – I just looked up BUFFALO GAL; it does sound like something I’d enjoy.

    Hi Dawn,

I am enjoying the challenges too. They are a lot of fun. I finished my Memorable Memoir Challenge. I have it on the sidebar of my blog. Do I need to bring the links down here??? What do I do? Help. Thanks.

My words under my challenges look invisible. As though I used invisible ink to write the authors and/or titles. Can somebody tell me how to correct this problem? I don’t know what to do. It’s a usual day. I’m lost.

  • drug addiction is really a very bad problem of the society, it destroys the life of a person`*~

Amazingly, I’ve finished my Memorable Memoir challenge. I need to hook up the books here. I might to try it now.

  • Tea

Well, I always have trouble linking. I’ll just have to spend my time on it.
