This is a book I’ve been eagerly anticipating! Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian is back with The Swan Thieves, here’s the synopsis:
Psychiatrist Andrew Marlowe has a perfectly ordered life–solitary, perhaps, but full of devotion to his profession and the painting hobby he loves. This order is destroyed when renowned painter Robert Oliver attacks a canvas in the National Gallery of Art and becomes his patient. In response, Marlowe finds himself going beyond his own legal and ethical boundaries to understand the secret that torments this genius, a journey that will lead him into the lives of the women closest to Robert Oliver and toward a tragedy at the heart of French Impressionism.
Ranging from American museums to the coast of Normandy, from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth, from young love to last love, The Swan Thieves is a story of obsession, the losses of history, and the power of art to preserve human hope.
The generous people at Hachette Audio are offering an audiobook of The Swan Thieves to THREE readers of She is Too Fond of Books! Thank you, Hachette!

update 1/30/10:
Thanks to Hachette Audio for sponsoring a giveaway of Elizabeth Kostova’s The Swan Thieves!
The winners, drawn randomly, are:
#1 – The Kool-Aid Mom – I’ve always loved Bosch. His weird and demented paintings have hidden little gems withing their images, making looking at them like a “Where’s Waldo?” in Hell.My favorite pictures, though, are the ones done by my mom and dad. They may not sell for much in an auction, but they’re priceless to me.
#2 – Amanda West – My favorite artist is Vermeer. I love the way his paintings are realistic and full of color.
#34 – ikkinlala – One of my favourite artists is Emily Carr.
Congratulations!
Please contact me by midnight EST on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 with your mailing address, which I’ll forward to the publisher. Remember, US/Canada addresses only, no P.O. Boxes.

Oh jeez, I know virtually nothing about artists. Uh…how about Edward Hopper, or maybe Dali? Please enter me 243 times for this one please, one for each of the times I’ve thought about how much I want to read this book and heaved a big sigh.
My favorite artists are Caravaggio (particularly The Cardsharps) and Renoir (At the Theater). But there are certainly more!
Thanks for the great giveaway!
I’ve been hearing such great things about this book, and I’m really in need of a new audio book for the car. A favorite artist is Edmund Osthaus who painted wonderful pictures of bird dogs around the turn of the 20th century. Thanks for the giveaway.
I think one of my all time fave artists is Frida k. got to love her
thanks for this giveway
Thomas Kincade is one of my most favorite artists. I love all the details and lights.
Thanks! :0)
I adore Matisse. He was my first favorite artists, and even after many art history classes, he’s still on my very long list.
[...] Calling all you who loved The Historian! [...]
No need to enter me, doll. (But funnily enough, I just posted a link to some interesting art at the Meet and Greet; come on by and check it out!)
I’m dropping in to say thanks for the e-mail. I’ve got this posted at Win a Book.
One of my all-time favorite paintings is called “Cotopaxi” by Frederick Edwin Church, a 19th century American landscape painter. I have a print of it in my house.
Thanks for entering me!
I like a lot of the impressionists. One of my favorite painters is Degas, there is such beauty in those ballerina/dancer paintings. Thanks!
My favorite artist is Monet, definitely.

One of my favorite painters is Gustav Klimpt. I love “The Kiss” – the gold leaf, mosiac feel and the romance!
I’m hearing so many good things about this book already so I’d love to be entered. I love Vincent Van Gogh. I love how he used color and just laid on the paint. When I saw his paintings in an art museum, I just wanted to touch it — it was so thick and vibrant. My favorite is probably Starry Starry Night. : )
My favorite artist is Wyland.
I’d love the chance to win this book, so please enter me in your giveaway. And I have to agree with your choice of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers is one of my favorites as well.
I’ve always loved Monet. He’s so soothing. Thanks for the giveaway.

Claude Monet is my favorite artist.
OH – I would love to be entered. I will finish my library copy tonight, but I know this is one that I want to have on my personal shelves and re-read!
I have only just recently learned to appreciate art, and every painting in the Musee D’Orsay could be considered a favorite. I could probably narrow the focus a bit and say either Monet or Van Gogh as my most favorite.
Thanks for this great give away offer!

I loved “The Historian” and I am so excited about this book, I have been looking forward to her next novel for several years. Kostova’s use of language gently evokes powerful and intense images/scenes. I could just keep gushing….
I would love to be entered in the giveaway.
Favorite paintings/artists:
Two Women on the Beach at Skagen by Peter Severin Kroyer (always reminded me of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening)
Portrait of Madame X by John Singer Sargent
Paris Street; Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte
Artemisia Gentileschi (a favorite, more for her story and courage perhaps as I am not a fan of this artistic period, but she painted disturbing and astounding works, daring and courageous in her time)
Betty by Gerhard Richter (I saw his work at the Art Institute of Chicago and then discovered this one in St. Louis)
Danse à la Ville and Dance at Bougival by Renoir
I’m a fan of Van Gogh – I like the vibrancy of his work. I’m not a fan of the soft colors, it looks light and soft. I like the hardcore colors and texture that comes through with V.G.
I think my favorite artist is Burne-Jones, but I am a fan of all the pre-Raphaelites – I am hoping to go to Montreal this weekend to see a Waterhouse exhibit.
I literally just finished reading The Swan Thieves last night and kept waking up during the night with parts of the book still in my head. It is a book to savor, while you are reading it and afterwards as well. I would love to have the audio book to listen to to be able to experience the book in a new way. Am I getting obsessive?
Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists and the one I thought of while reading this book. He certainly fits the obsessive artist role.
I admit to being a huge Van Gogh fan…Starry Night being my favorite. In fact, both my laptop and my iPod are skinned with that painting!
Please count me in. Thanks for the chance. My fav is Monet.
