Anna and Serena are again hosting the War through the Generations reading challenge. In 2010 the challenge focuses on the Vietnam War.
You can read this post at the War through the Generations (Vietnam War) blog to get all the details, in a nutshell:
- any genre (children’s, fiction, non-fiction) and any format (print, audio, e-book) counts
- overlaps with other challenges are allowed
- book can take place before, during, or after the War, with the Vietnam War taking primary or secondary theme
- a movie or two can supplement books for the challenge
There are 3 levels at which one can join the challenge. I’m dipping into it with a commitment of at least 5 books. What will I read? I don’t yet know (although The Things They Carried is high on my list, and there’s a group read of Paco’s Story in the works), but I’ll be checking the suggested reading list on the blog.
- The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli
- Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann
Is the War through the Generations – Vietnam War challenge on your list? Do you have a “must read” book to suggest?

Thanks for joining the challenge! I’ve got you listed on the official participants list!
I’m in for this one too, and THE THINGS THEY CARRIED is on my list. If you want, you can check out the other books I plan to read here: http://age30books.blogspot.com/2010/01/vietnam-challenge-why-and-what-im.html – maybe you’ll find one that appeals to you.
Good luck with this one.
I think anyone truly interested in learning about the VietNam experience should read Bill McCloud’s What Should We Tell Our Children About Vietnam. The story behind how this book came to be is remarkable.
I’m doing this challenge too, and I hope to read The Things They Carried. Vance read it in high school and he recommends it highly. Good luck, Dawn!
I haven’t joined this one but I do remember growing up with the Vietnam war. I’m looking forward to The Lotus Eaters, the story about a female war correspondence during this war.
I’m participating in this challenge as well. I’ve read quite a few of Tim O’Brien’s books and I must say he should definitely be on the reading list! Have fun
I am doing this challenge too but haven’t read any yet. Here’s my potential list to read: http://mentalfoodie.blogspot.com/2010/01/books-i-may-read-for-vietnam-war.html
Glad you’re joining us again this year! I highly recommend Tim O’Brien, and you should join us for Paco’s Story. It’s a great book, though graphic and hard to read at times.
