Fizzy Thoughts is going to New York in May for BEA and Book Blogger Con … along with many other folks from the book-blog-osphere. To get us in a New York state of mind, she’s designed a fun reading challenge called … wait for it … The New York Challenge! All the details are here; this is what it boils down to - review at least one book set in New York.
I’ve got lots of books set in New York, but I’m sharing my absolute favorite with you. It’s a hand-illustrated memoir about a trip to the Big Apple, complete with screeching train and taxi rides, an adventure in a tower with a pregnant woman, birthday cake, and wild animals. Our elder daughter wrote it seven years ago when she was in first grade:
Written and Illustrated by [Little Woman - Age 13 (when she was 6)]
My book is dedicated to
My friend Stephanie
Because
She allwas [was always] nice and kind to me.
[note: as of 2/22/10, neither LM13 nor I have any idea who Stephanie is!]
Whoo! Whoo! Last summer my family and I took a train to New York City.
Yeah! We’re going to New York City! I can’t wait to get there!
When we got there, my Dad hailed a taxi. He told the driver to drive us to our hotel.
That same day, we went to the Empire State building. We got to cut the line because my sister, [Little Woman - in utero (age 7 now)], was in my Mom’s stomach.
Later that day we went to my friend []‘s first birthday party. It was as fun as going to Disney World!
Then we took a taxi to the Central Park Zoo.
We got to the gate and the park helper gave my brother [Little Man - age 5 (age 12 now)] and I a little book of stamps to keep.
We got to feed the animals and got a prize too.
Later that day we packed up our stuff, took a taxi to the train station, and came home.
Boy! New York was great! I hope I can go to New York again!

I love that she mentioned all the taxi rides! What a great book for your family to treasure!
A best selling author in the making! But no one can afford to buy this book–it is priceless!
What a great souvenir of your trip!
You picked the best book for this challenge. It made me wish I was heading for all those taxi rides and the Central Park Zoo.
TOO CUTE!!!! What a treasure.
This book is just adorable, and I bet it has a permanent place on the family shelf! Your daughter sounds like a great kid, and her book is just wonderful!
That is the best NYC-based book ever. I miss my kids bring things like this home. The paper my hs senior is doing on bio-environmentalism will probably not touch me in the same way!
That’s the BEST NYC book ever!!!! How fabulous.
What a great memento – thanks for sharing it! Sounds like it was a great trip, too. I hope my family’s visit to NYC in June is just as much fun!
I agree. Fabulous book!
Aw, your daughter’s book is adorable! Isn’t that stuff just amazing? I love reading my kids’ old vacation journals and school essays.
And the NYC reading challenge sounds like fun- I look forward to reading lots of NYC book reviews.
