I think the reason some of the recipes are not familiar to other depression era cooks is because she is Italian, and the depression recipes she shares are from an Italian origin, so they are a little different from other people who are not Italian. My mother-in-law and her mother were full blooded Italian, and they cooked a little different than my grandmother did-who is not Italian- and who was also in the depression era. I love Clara's recipes, and realize that if we all ate this way, there would be no child-hood obesity or adult cholesterol problems. She is a blessing, and so charming. I love Clara.

This sounds like a charming little book and I am really interested in having a look at it. Great review, I will have to keep my eyes open for it! I also love the quote about scrubbing the kitchen...she sounds like she has a lot of spunk!

Beth - watching the video brought back a lot of visual memories for me.

Nan - apparently there's a series of her cooking videos on YouTube; I didn't know of her until I got the book.

Lynda - she has great stories to share :) I'm off to check out your Weekend Cooking!

Anna - I did both today ... oatmeal for breakfast, and cookies for dessert once the kids were in school.

Sounds like a charming book. I probably should ask my gram about her Great Depression experiences!

Kay at My Random Acts of Reading sent me over here thinking I might like this book, and I do! It sounds just wonderful. And I adore Clara! What a great video. Thanks so much for this. I'll be buying the book.

I have a coffeepot just like that! I think my grandmother gave it to me. We use it for camping.

Neither of my parents' families were all that poor, but they had victory gardens and had to watch their money. No cookies for breakfast that anyone ever mentioned to me.

Kathy - I thought cookies for breakfast was very unusual, too, especially for the times. She writes that they had bread w/butter and coffee (mostly milk, a drop of coffee) that they'd dip the bread into. On Sundays they would have cookies instead of the bread w/the light coffee.

Both of my parents lived through the Depression and they've never mentioned eating cookies for breakfast. I'd probably enjoy this for her reminiscing.
