I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding biographies of Louisa May Alcott. This has been a banner year with not one but TWO new books, including Lost Summer. I have always found LMA to be fascinating and I very much relate to her being "different," especially in an age where conformity was everything. I happen to live close by to Concord and visit Orchard House every time I've finished a book on her. I can just feel the presence of the family in that house!

I am reading it just like Ti is reading it - sooo slowly because I never want it to end! I feel utterly immersed in this story and I've learned so many new things about Louisa and Bronson especially.

BTW, I love how the publisher of the book used old fashioned looking paper and type - nice touch! Makes for a great tactile experience that Kindle can never replace.

This book is the perfect "vacation-in-my-head" book - thank you to the author for such a treat!

Anna - you'll learn about the Alcott family and their contemporaries without realizing you're learning (as you read THE LOST SUMMER)

Bluestocking - she really captured the spirit of the Alcott family, and the typical NH setting.

Meg - let's go with whetted! I read to enjoy the story, too. I know there are some (I hesitate to say zealots) who won't let fiction be fiction :)

Care - have you read THE LOST SUMMER yet?

Lisa - I'm thinking of some contraversy around David Ebershoff's THE 19TH WIFE. This was a wonderful piece of historical fiction (woven into a contemporary storyline); some readers were unhappy with the way Brigham Young was portrayed. Like you, I use historical fiction as a starting point; if I'm interested in the subject, I'll research further.

zibilee - "lovable curmudgeon" ... what a great description!

diane - you're welcome! I hope you get to read it soon.

Margot - The author tells a wonderful "imagining" of what COULD HAVE happened that summer ... I hope you like it.

Colleen - fiction is fiction. (and the truth can be stranger than fiction!)

savvy - oh, I may have mislead you. The author researched via journals, and some small snippets are quoted at the beginning of chapters, but there are not a lot of LMA's journal entries in the book (some may be used as dialogue?)

Sarah - I think you'll enjoy it! Especially how the four daughters may be "labelled" by their family (shades of THE OPPOSITE OF ME in the Alcott family history!)

Beth F - is it on your TBR?

I don't have a copy of this book, but it sounds so interesting. I'll have to check out Anna's copy when she finishes with it. I think I'd enjoy the interspersed journal and story entries.

I am really looking forward to reading this - I know I will take it at face value and not worry about whether every fact can be verified - it is fiction, after all!

Thanks for your review!

I just got this book and I was excited to get it. After your review, I'm really gung-ho to get started on it. I loved all of her books as a young girl so this should be a good addition.
