Children's Book Review: *Of Thee I Sing* by Barack Obama

  • Of Thee I Sing:  A Letter to My Daughters by Barack Obama; illustrated by Loren Long
  • Reading level: Ages 4-8 (see my notes; appropriate for all ages!)
  • Hardcover: 40 pages
  • Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers (November 16, 2010)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0375835278
  • Back-of-the-book blurb:  In this letter to his daughters, President Barack Obama has written a moving tribute to thirteen groundbreaking Americans and the ideals that have shaped our nation. From the artistry of Georgia O’Keeffe, to the courage of Jackie Robinson, to the patriotism of George Washington, President Obama sees the traits of these heroes within his own children, and within all of America’s children.

Illustrations by award-winning artist Loren Long at once capture the personalities and achievements of these great Americans and the innocence and promise of childhood.

This book celebrates the characteristics that unite all Americans, from our nation’s founders to generations to come. It is about the potential within each of us to pursue our dreams and forge our own paths.

She Is Too Fond of Books’ reviewOf Thee I Sing is ostensibly a letter from the President to his two daughters, but it’s truly a book of encouragement and inspiration, making a connection between achievers from American history and the children of today – the leaders of tomorrow.

The left page of each spread asks a question, “Have I told you that you are creative” (or “that you are a healer,” “that you have your own song,” “that you are kind,” etc.), and pictures two young girls approaching another child.

The right page of the spread identifies that child, and tells of his or her place in history.  In response to “Have I told you that you are kind?” the right-hand page answers:

A woman named Jane Addams fed the poor and helped them find jobs.  She opened doors and gave people hope.  She taught adults and invited children to play and laugh and let their spirits grow wide.

As the reader turns the pages, these young people gather together and journey to learn about other American achievers – Albert Einstein, Billie Holiday, Helen Keller, Cesar Chavez, Neil Armstrong, and 8 others; a baker’s dozen of Americans representing “all races, religions, and beliefs.”  The final page gives more information about these thirteen groundbreakers; such a subtle (sneaky!) way to expose my kids to more history … they absorb so much when read picture books!

My kids love the story – and the gorgeous illustrations of Loren Long!  I appreciate the message of encouragement, that we each have the potential to reach our dreams, to fight for what we believe in, and to walk our own paths.  I expect Of Thee I Sing to be a hit not only for holiday giving, but also an appropriate gift upon graduation (with a message similar to Oh, the Places You’ll Go!)

Take two minutes to watch this video narrated by Loren Long, the illustrator of the book; you may know his work as the illustrator of Otis and other children’s books.  The video shows more of inside spreads, and gives Long’s perspective on the project and its message:

President Obama will donate after-tax proceeds from Of Thee I Sing to a scholarship program run by the Fisher House Foundation dedicated to providing scholarships to the children of fallen and disabled service members.   Please visit www.fisherhouse.org for additional details.
