Author event: David Hyde Costello and *Little Pig Joins the Band*

What do you get when you combine a curious Little Pig (“My name is Jacob!”), a creative author/illustrator, and a group of inquisitive young listeners? … a fun afternoon of stories, music, and grins all around!

David Hyde Costello visited the Bookshop to read and sign his newest picture book, Little Pig Joins the Band. The premise of the book really struck a chord with young readers, especially those who have older siblings or other family members who seem to always be telling them “no, you’re too young to do that.”:

“Little Pig has trouble keeping up with his older–and bigger–siblings. When they get out Grandpa’s old marching-band instruments, Little Pig is too little to play any of them. However, he gets a big idea: the disorganized band could use a leader.”

Author David Hyde Costello was greeted by a chorus of kids eager to learn about the items he brought to demonstrate – three unique musical instruments created from recycled material – a “kazumpet,” a bottle-xyolophone, and a string guitar.

First, he chatted with the kids, asked them if they’ve ever been told “no, you’re too little!” and told them a bit about Little Pig and his big idea.

After reading the story (complete with character voices), Costello answered more questions, then showed them his homemade instruments and allowed the children to try them.

It was a very fun afternoon – David Hyde Costello is an inspiration with his connection to kids via the character of Little Pig, and with his patient and calm interaction with the audience.

He’s also the author/illustrator of I Can Help and Here They Come. In addition to his work with children’s picture books, he has worked on set design for Broadway musicals (Hello Dolly) and films (Spiderman, and Angels in America), and created puppets for several theater productions. David Hyde Costello signed each book and drew a picture of Little Pig in action.
