What’s in a name (reference, moniker)? This is an annual challenge (contest, competition) hosted by Beth Fish Reads. Each year (365 days, 12 months), she composes a list (items) of categories (classes, divisions), and asks us to read books (print edition, audio format, e-book) for each. This year’s categories, and some examples of titles that would meet each [...] It’s that time of year – assessing how we’ve met the goals we set last year, and choosing what we’ll conquer this coming year. 2011 was A Year of No (or Few!) Challenges for me. And I met that goal head-on! :) 2012 will be A Year of a Select Few Challenges (I’m getting bolder). I’ll continue a [...] Raise your hand if you love Europa Editions – high quality literature in an attractive (and affordable) paperback format (with French flaps – don’t forget the French flaps!). Wow, that’s a lot of hands! You know who else loves Europa Editions? Marie (a librarian who blogs at Boston Bibliophile) and Liberty (a bookseller). They’ve created the Europa [...] I’ve been introduced to a wonderful mystery series via Book Club Girl’s “Mad about Maisie” readalong. I was living under a Maisie Dobbs rock until I found out about the readalong … how could I have not heard about Jacqueline Winspear’s books, with their heroine who straddles the line between “upstairs” and “downstairs” while blending [...] The good news is that this is the last “challenge not met” post on my list (for this year!). The bad news is that it’s for a reading challenge that I was especially excited about. I had committed to reading 8 books, at least 3 of which were non-fiction; instead, I read 5 (but included 3 non-fiction!): Persepolis [...] Does this sound like someone you’d want to spend some time with?: The daughter of a struggling greengrocer, Maisie Dobbs was only thirteen when she was sent to work as a maid for wealthy London aristocrats. But being bright and thoughtful beyond her years – and through the patronage of her benevolent employers, Maisie studies her [...] In 2010 Anna and Serena hosted the War through the Generations reading challenge, with a focus on the Vietnam War. I had joined at the “Dip” level (as in “taking a dip” not “Dawn, you’re a dip!”). This was a commitment to five books, as follows: any genre (children’s, fiction, non-fiction) and any format (print, audio, e-book) [...] Yay, another successful challenge! (I have a few “I didn’t quite meet the challenge” posts coming up, so I’m focusing on the positive here). I hoped I’d meet the 100-book goal in 2010, and this was a great way to track it.
