Giveaway: bookstore gift card, Chipotle, and a kitten?!?

I’m so excited about this very generous giveaway sponsored by Harper Perennial!

If you subscribe to The Olive Reader, the Harper Perennial blog, you’re familiar with the author’s love of 1. books, 2.  Chipotle, and 3.  kittens.  Here’s something fun that involves all three …

Write a simple Spotlight on Bookstores post of at least 200 words (to give you some perspective, this giveaway notice is 325 words).  Leave a comment below, listing the name and location of the bookstore (it’s OK the store has already been Spotlighted – every customer/reader has his/her own perspective on the store, your experience will be personal), then email your essay to me.

What would you write about?  Here’s the pitch I send when a reader/author/friend inquires about the series:

The Spotlight on Bookstores (index is here) is a weekly series in which guest posters (bloggers, authors, and readers of all types!) write a personal essay that highlights a bookstore that is “special” in some way.  I’m careful not to say “favorite” as many of us frequent several stores.  They read more like anecdotes than advertisements, and might note a bookseller who is always spot-on with recommendations, an interesting event that happened there, or to-die-for scones in the coffee bar.

I’ll use random.org to select four winners around Labor Day.  The prizes are:

  • One $25 gift certificate to the store you Spotlighted
  • Two $10 Chipotle gift certificates
  • One “spoonie” yellow cat magnet made from the bowl of a spoon; this is very cute, about 2 inches across.  I bought it at the Yankee Peddler, which has a wonderful assortment of eclectic gifts and jewelry

By submitting an entry to the giveaway, you agree to it being run as a future Spotlight on Bookstores post.  You will be given the opportunity to add links, photos, and additional editing before if runs, if you like.

Be creative and have fun with this! Haiku, a personal experience, a eulogy to a bygone favorite … we’re pretty flexible here (like kittens)!

  • What a great contest! I’ll write a post on Over the Moon books in Crozet, Virginia.

  • You and Erica are both fantastic. Maybe this will be the incentive I need to write about The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn!

  • This sounds lovely. I’ll write one up about a beloved bygone Olssons in Bethesda, Md.

  • Glad this incentive is meeting such enthusiasm!

I received a submission from Lisa on “Seasoned Booksellers” in Rochester, VT

Books of Wonder, in New York City, is my favorite indie bookstore for two reasons. First, the staff has a great depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the books they sell. A few years ago I struck up a conversation about the young adult novels I was reading with the woman who was checking me out. She hadn’t read the ones I was talking about. I was happy to tell her why I loved them. She then recited a list of her recent favorites. I hadn’t read any of them and was so excited to put them on my list! The other reason I love Books of Wonder is because they give local authors a chance to shine. Most of us write about things we know and the way that other authors perceive the places and things that I see every day is fascinating. I think it helps me, as an author, to remember to never take the seemingly banal for granted.

Dawn, this appeared while I was on vacation and I didn’t see it. Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on my “Four Bookstores…” post. I want to write one about The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, AZ. I know you and I talked about that before. I’ll try to have something to you by Sunday afternoon. Is that OK? Let me know if you need it sooner.

  • Sending a spotlight on Loganberry Books in Cleveland, OH – my favorite used bookstore and a fave of my customers, as well!
