DeWolf shared a guest post yesterday, in which he spoke of &#8220;no time like the present&#8221; for meaningful conversations about diversity, tolerance, and justice in the U.S.</p>
<p>DeWolf has recently published <a href="http://www.inheritingthetrade.com"><em>Inheriting the Trade</em></a>.  This is a memoir about his experiences during the making of a documentary film, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.tracesofthetrade.org/">Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North</a></span>, in which he and nine other (white) family members journeying into their slave-trading heritage, and issued a call for reconciliation.</p>

<p>2009 will surely be remembered as a year chock-full of &#8220;teachable moments&#8221; about race in the United States. Our nation&#8217;s <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/20/opinion/20kristof.html">first black president</a> nominated the first <a href="http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/29/weekend-opinionator-sotomayor-race-and-the-right/">Hispanic woman</a> to the Supreme Court. Charges of racism in connection with both a Philadelphia swim club&#8217;s <a href="http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Swim-Club-Members-Nothing-to-Do-With-Race.html">banning</a> of a minority day care center&#8217;s children from their pool and with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates&#8217;s <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2009/07/21/racial_talk_swirls_with_gates_arrest/">arrest</a> both made headlines. Add the <a href="http://www.examiner.com/x-5890-Obama-Administration-Examiner%7Ey2009m7d22-Is-President-Obamas-race-behind-the-birther-conspiracy-movement">birther</a>, <a href="http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/28317/">reparations</a>, and <a href="http://mediamatters.org/research/200908170019">Nazi</a> conspiracy theories being tossed about at health care town hall meetings and it is clear that issues of race, gender, and privilege continue to impact us all. The need for deeper conversations about diversity, tolerance, and justice in the United States could not be more timely or important.</p>
<p>Author Thomas Norman DeWolf (<em><a href="http://www.beacon.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=2020">Inheriting The Trade: A Northern Family Confronts Its Legacy as the Largest Slave-Trading Dynasty in U.S. History</a></em>, Beacon Press) has led-and participated in-conversations about &#8220;race&#8221; at colleges, universities, middle and high schools, the National Constitution Center, bookstores, book fairs, libraries, museums, churches, film festivals, and social justice conferences across the nation. Tom can be seen on <a title="blocked::http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?main_page=product_video_info&amp;tID=5&amp;src=atom&amp;atom=recent_book_tv.xml&amp;products_id=198571-1" href="http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?main_page=product_video_info&amp;tID=5&amp;src=atom&amp;atom=recent_book_tv.xml&amp;products_id=198571-1">Book TV</a> and <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4258542n">The Early Show</a> on CBS.</p>
<p>Tom is now traveling the internet on his first <a href="http://www.inheritingthetrade.com/schedule.html">virtual tour</a> (coordinated by <a title="blocked::http://www.authorsassistant.com/Barko.htm" href="http://www.authorsassistant.com/Barko.htm">Stephanie Barko, Literary Publicist</a>) to <img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-6653" title="inheriting-the-trade" src="http://www.sheistoofondofbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/inheriting-the-trade-198x300.jpg" alt="inheriting-the-trade" width="198" height="300" />meet-online-people interested in honest and meaningful conversations about race in America. He&#8217;ll discuss his book, the Emmy-nominated film of his family&#8217;s journey <em><a title="blocked::http://www.tracesofthetrade.org/" href="http://www.tracesofthetrade.org/">Traces of the Trade</a></em>, aspects of American history that have been deliberately hidden, and the impact that the trauma of historic slavery continues to have on all of us today. Tom&#8217;s interest in history is in how it informs the present and can illuminate a path toward healing and a more hopeful future.</p>
